Hotel Breakers Ohio - Hotel del Coronado California

We recently came back from from a trip to southern California (OC, LA & San Diego).

Our visit to San Diego took us to Coronado Island, home of Hotel del Coronado, a place that was built at about the same time Hotel Breakers was.

The Breakers & Coronado look remarkably the same in many aspects, both waterfront properties, not only the exterior structure, but the hotel lobbies, rooms & peculiar history but check out each hotels web site.

Are ther any comments on hotel breakers / hotel del coronado links. There are none in CP..TQOAWP.

I love CP history , if there is a link here, it would be way cool.

Re: Hotel Breakers Ohio - Hotel del Coronado California

It's an interesting comparison. I've never stayed at the Hotel del Coronado, but from the website it looks to be a little more upscale than Hotel Breakers. It's an all wood building though, just like the Breakers was. Now, of course, the new parts of the Breakers were not built using wood construction.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

Re: Hotel Breakers Ohio - Hotel del Coronado California

I have been to both hotels several times and noted the similarity, but I didn't know that they were built about the same time. One notable difference is that Breakers, at least initially, was to a large extent a beach resort. The shape of the hotel and large beach side veranda emphasized the enjoyment of the beach. At Coronado, it has a beach front, but it doesn't draw you to it like Breakers does. One reason might be that that Pacific Ocean water is cold all year long and not very inviting to spend time in. Also, the climate their is very mild, even in the summer.

By the way, if you like brunches, they have an awesome on their at that hotel on Sunday.

If you want to see what it was like back in the day, it was used in the movie Some Like It Hot as the hotel where most of the movie is set.

Re: Hotel Breakers Ohio - Hotel del Coronado California

I recently saw the movie "Some Like it Hot" on PBS or one of those Canadian public stations (very funny movie, great stars, Tony Curtis & Jack Lemmon accompany Marilyn Monroe) and yes, the Hotel Del Coronado was used as a set in the movie.

Very interestingly near the end of the movie, Marilyn Monroe says something like "......I'm not sure if I'm in Sandusky or if I'm in ........."

To me, this is an obvious reference to CP's Hotel Breakers from back in the day in a classic old Hollywood movie.

That wasn't an allusion to CP, she was just coked out of her mind.

[url][url]Actually she wasn't making an allusion to hotel breakers, her character "sugar" was hailed from Sandusky - IE see wikipedia "sandusky" The character of Sugar, played by Marylin Monro in Some Like It Hot, hailed from Sandusky.

I think its a good coincidence, but I doubt they were drawing on the architecture as a resemblance point.
