Heads Up - VIP Auction for Magnum

To celebrate Magnum's 20th anniversary, Red Cross and Cedar Point will be teaming up on a VIP ride auction for the famed coaster. This is just an FYI and heads up. Complete details will be available soon. Bidding is scheduled to start April 20.

Re: Heads Up - VIP Auction for Magnum

Interesting. I wonder how much this will pull in for the Red Cross? People love to donate money to ride a coaster that very few people have before (Diamondback, Maverick), but donating to ride a coaster thats 20 years old? As great of a coaster as it is, it will be interesting to see how many people bid. Hopefully, people will still want to donate, regardless of the "prize"

Hopefully there will be more to the package than just first rides of the season. If they do it right, I think they can lure in a lot of donations.

Maybe they'll also get items for Magnum's 20th Birthday! Clothes, pictures, etc.

Re: Heads Up - VIP Auction for Magnum

I still can't believe that Magnum is 20 years old! I remember the opening season how long the lines were to get on that ride! I never thought that they could make a bigger coaster than that one, I was wrong!

Re: Heads Up - VIP Auction for Magnum

I am having my son find my VHS home movie of Cedar Point 1989, and record the Magnum section of the video off the television using a digital camera.

In 1989 the park opened for you to walk around with no rides running. I recorded the workers wiping down the coaster trains, then a train leaving the station, waiting for the train to return after a long, long time, then coming to a screaching halt on the 1st brake after the tunnel. It shows the crowd of guest waiting for Magnum to open.

You can hear people in awe, just looking at it.

He is also going to show what the flower garden under the sky ride looked like in the video.

When he gets it finished, maybe someone can help me post the video for everyone to see. Hope to have it done soon, he's working on it now.

There are a number of fairly inexpensive products out there that will allow you to connect your VCR directly to the PC to record video. There is nothing worse than youtube videos of people who taped their TV. You can even use it to make digital copies of all your old home movies.

Thanks bholcomb, I never heard of those products. I am looking into them, to learn more about them. They look like something I was looking for.

But for now, the recording off of the television screen will have to suffice. My son is downloading the video to his facebook page as I type this.

Re: Heads Up - VIP Auction for Magnum

Did anyone bid for a seat on Magnum? I think it's pretty impressive that after 20 years, people are still willing to pay $550 to be the first riders of the season on it. Of course it's no $102,000... but still pretty good

It was worth every bit. Plus, with corporate matching, the Firelands Red Cross nets $1,100. Good stuff.
