Cool video. Looks like they worked hard on this.

I thought was cool too. Well done. I cannot wait to see it for myself Thursday. I did not know that CP could make emergency announcements on the park speakers.

Re: Starlight Experience video details new show

Very cool video. I enjoyed seeing the backend of the system, and happily recognized the rack-mounts and such that they used. It was also cool seeing a real life application for some equipment that I may be using in a year or two at my church (though I personally am hoping for the Conga lighting console, the ION is another strong consideration. I was actually kind of surprised to hear they were running CAT5 directly out to even that close bank of lights, knowing the length limitations of using CAT5 for DMX. Very cool setup, and I actually took away a few more lighting ideas for some fixtures and equipment.

Three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40, and a hammer. Duct tape if it moves and it shouldn't, WD-40 if it doesn't move and should, and the hammer as the last resort.

I forgot to ask Lance, but don't they usually run DMX over shielded four conductor cable with four-pin XLR's at each end? Maybe it was five or six, I haven't seen one up close in a long time, and obviously looking at the automated lighting plugged in, you can't see.

Re: Starlight Experience video details new show

DMX Cables have either 3 pin or 5 pin XLR connectors on the end. There are two pins on the 5 pin connector that never got used, so many places have been switching to 3 pin connectors.

Re: Starlight Experience video details new show

I believe the light board at my church has a DMX-in 5-pin, though we only use standard 3-pin XLR cabling because we only run 32 channels right now. We're looking at going to such a high capacity board because we currently have two miniMacs that take up...12 individual channels, and would like to use more of the intelligent lighting systems in the future. Obviously, our (possible) 64 channel board wouldn't be the best solution versus one of the newer boards, even though a couple thousand channels would be overkill (of course, our new tech booth features as many outlets as a normal large house, about 140 total!). According to what I understand from the theater lighting company we consult with out of Indianapolis, we would need to convert to using the standard 5-pin DMX, as the 3-pin XLR would not be able to handle our data loads.

I would be surprised if for what they are doing for the SE, they aren't using 5-pin DMX. It just seems like too much to handle with standard 3-pin XLR from what I understand and took away from that video.

And this is exactly why I wanted to get an audio or lighting tech position last year. I love this stuff.

This is also very interesting to me, as I've ran a computerized Christmas light show for 3 years now. It's all DIY hardware though. I can't wait to make it out to Cedar Point to actually see Starlight Experience in person.
