Companies cope with Twitter imposters

Cedar Point among companies facing problems with fake Twitter accounts.

Posted June 28, 2009, 4:33P by Walt

Twitter has pledged to crack down on people impersonating celebrities by creating fake Twitter profiles but is moving slower to protect companies facing a similar problem.

Cedar Point recently faced that issue when a person outside the park held control of the Twitter account @cedarpoint.  The company received an email from marketing consultant David Goebel who offered to hand over control of the @cedarpoint account in exchange for season passes. He also suggested that Cedar Fair hire his firm, Goebel Group Inc. to maintain the park's Twitter account.

Goebel eventually surrendered the Twitter account at Cedar Fair's request.

Re: Companies cope with Twitter imposters

Squatting isn't a new thing in the world of the internet. If I catch Cedar Fair napping and get my hands on www.cedarpoint.com, I own it and can sell it back at whatever price I deem fair.

However, if during the time I own the domain name I operate a website that pretends to be the official company website, they can sue me for that.

I think that's where the grey area of twitter comes in. If you hold a company's name as a twitter account and then issue "statements" as though you are that company, you can be in trouble. If you simply sit on it, there isn't much they can do (except in this case they CAN ask twitter to de-activate the account).

Re: Companies cope with Twitter imposters

Is that still how things work, post-1999? I thought squatting was illegal, regardless of whether or not the site was in use.

True, and you'd still make a more competent lawyer than some.

Re: Companies cope with Twitter imposters

I never understood that guys problem. Was his kid killed when another kid threw a spear at him while some omniscient voice shouted "GET OVER HERE!"

He's as bad as the moron who fought to have Lawn Darts banned in the US instead of teaching his kid not to stand in the path of flying darts.

Ouch lawn darts. I'v had one jammed in my head before. Lots and lots of stitches. Not my fault but the throwers.

Re: Companies cope with Twitter imposters

Somehow I doubt you weren't at least partially at fault.

Re: Companies cope with Twitter imposters

I was 7 the other kid was 8. We weren't even playing the game they were just out in the yard because we were cleaning out the shed. He picked one up and winged it as high as he could. It ended up in my skull.

Thanks for assuming stuff though.

Re: Companies cope with Twitter imposters

At least they surrendered it after realizing their strategy to con CP wasn't going to work. Tony La Russa tried to sue Twitter and it generated some attention, although I believe he dropped the suit.

Re: Companies cope with Twitter imposters

So it was yours and your friend's fault. I assumed correctly.

The point is that if not for morons doing decidedly moronic things, there wouldn't need to be such travesties as Lawn Darts being taken off the shelves. After all, morons will just find other, more moronic ways to hurt themselves.

Re: Companies cope with Twitter imposters

Yeah if standing outside is my fault then yes you assumed right. I guess that means the 400 people who get struck by lightning every year are at fault too.

Re: Companies cope with Twitter imposters

Yes, if those people are standing outside during a lightning storm in the plains while holding a metal pole, then yeah.

Don't get all huffy - the point is just that, like most kids, you used poor judgment, and incorrectly trusted your friend to not be an imbecile. Hence, partially your fault, just as careening head first into a tree whilst sledding at 5 years old was mostly my siblings' fault, but also partially mine. That doesn't mean sleds should be taken off the shelves, though.

Re: Companies cope with Twitter imposters

For standing outside while its lightning? Yes. There are ways to avoid it: don't hold metal poles, go inside, don't be the tallest thing standing alone in a field.

So yes they are, in part, responsible for being struck by lightning.

That certainly explains a lot.
