Are classic flumes still built anymore?

Just curious if any parks these days make flumes like how WWL and STR (old one) were. It's too bad that CP didn't build a flume like these instead of the Shoot the Rapids we have now. I like the ride, but the smaller boat aspect was always more fun to me. Also, no restraints!

Thunder River at Waldameer isn't that old.

(Built in 1996. Older than I thought)

Hopkins and Mack still have them in their catalogs, I believe. Come to think of it, I think Mack did Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls, which admittedly is over a decade old at this point.

A decade and a half. We are getting old.

But as long as they keep a fresh coat of paint on the rides... :)

The traditional log flume is a much better ride. I never got STR (the new one)its not really a log flume and its not really coaster. But it is a way to get you into one of those family dryers. :)

Hopkins manufactured Waldameers and I'm sure they can still build them if anyone wanted one.

CPboy - I thought you loved the new STR.

I like the ride but prefer WWL.

I'm not sure you would call this a "traditional" log flume but it looks pretty fun and it opened this year.

I feel like STR has a lot of potential but as it is now i prefer WWL. They could have put a lot more in the slower moving parts of the ride.

Aw why not?! Shoot the Rapids is the best water ride around. ;)

Wow that's quite the water ride. Wonder how much that costed...

Many of those log flume elements at Phantasialand Germany could have been incorporated in Cedar Points STR, seems like they just gave up, or was it the we don't theming thing? As far as log flumes in the US go, Dudley Do Right is one of the best log flumes around. You get SOAKED, but well worth it!

I honestly think STR would be ten times better if the boats ran through the flume as quickly as WWL did. Isn't there a way to speed up the current? Even up to Thunder Canyon's speed. That moves quickly through the trough.

That log ride video was really neat! I would love to have something like that at Cedar Point

Life is like a rollercoaster! It is full of ups and downs

The speed of the boats in the flume is related to the water flow rate. Shoot the Rapids was built the way it was in order (I presume) to reduce the amount of pumping required...there is a relatively small vertical spread from the top of the channel (at the bottom of the long drop) to the bottom (at the base of the next lift). That reduces the distance the water has to be pumped up into the channel, but also reduces the speed of the boats. They could increase the flow by pumping harder (as Holiday World did on their version) but that defeats the purpose of building the ride this way.

Thunder Canyon was (perhaps still is?) the largest electricity bill in the park. In order to keep that ride running, three pumps have to pump a 36" column of water up the full height of the lift, on the order of 20'. I'm sure they did not want Shoot the Rapids to operate on that scale.

I've heard figures before on how much it cost to run, I don't know how true they are, but every one of them made me cringe

^Is that part of the electric bill or water bill?

I would think Wicked Twister would have a higher amount of electricity use with those LIMS being powered so much. Superman was the highest at GL.

Electricity is the expense, not water. Water for Thunder Canyon is free, they pump it from Lake Erie. Other water rides, like Shoot The Rapids, have a low water bill because the ride is filled once and the water is kept, similar to a swimming pool.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

Wicked Twister has downtime where things aren't always powered though I'd believe. Think Canyon has that stuff on from ride start to stop, it's constantly pumping that trough full of water after filling it to start the day. I would believe it to have a higher bill..But I could always be wrong, I've heard figures from reliable people but unless I got sent the bill (please don't) I don't know the actual figures.

Speaking of costs, I'd love to know how much just one of the pumps for that ride costs..That thing does move some serious water.

I would like a log ride where you can get a little wet but not drenched. Still haven't ridden STR.
