Keeping Cedar Point roller coaster in shape is mean feat

Carpenters ensure Mean Streak is safe each day before riders climb into cars and take on the ride.

Brad Sumser is one of the handful of union carpenters who walk Mean Streak every day during the season, and plenty more times before and after.

On a recent Wednesday morning Sumser and three other carpenters climbed into heavy safety harnesses just after sunrise, fastening themselves in and strapping on tool belts filled with the essentials: graphite spray, several wrenches, a long punch, Vise-Grips, pliers, a roofer’s hammer, tape measure, crescent wrench, wood chisel, ratchet and sockets, drill bits and an assortment of galvanized nuts, bolts and washers.
