Cedar Point Press Release

SANDUSKY, Ohio, June 1, 2005 – Take a trip back in history. On Thursday, June 9, Cedar Point amusement park/resort will hold a special ceremony to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the Hotel Breakers. Located along the sandy shore of Lake Erie, this grand hotel has provided comfort and convenience to millions of overnight guests over the last century. The ceremony, that is open to the public, will take place in the rotunda of the Hotel Breakers at 11 a.m.

Special live entertainment, proclamations from local government agencies and a presentation about the rich history and tradition of the Hotel Breakers by noted historian David Francis will take place at the ceremony. A complimentary ice cream social, sponsored by Toft Dairy, Sandusky, Ohio, will be held in the Beaches ‘n’ Cream ice cream parlor following the ceremony.

“We are proud to be part of the memories and traditions of millions of loyal guests who have experienced the Hotel Breakers over the last century,” said Wayne Olcott, corporate vice president of accommodations for Cedar Fair, L.P. “Very few hotels in the United States have survived and excelled over such a long time. Many families tell us they have made trips to the Breakers Hotel for generations and continue to do so. We hope those timeless memories and traditions continue for decades to come.”

The Hotel Breakers has been a fixture along the Cedar Point Beach since it first opened on June 12, 1905. Its commanding presence and sweeping views of Lake Erie are still mainstays, along with remnants of turn-of-the-century charm such as Tiffany stained-glass windows, a soaring five-story rotunda, original hardwood floors and wicker-type furniture. Today, the Hotel Breakers boasts 650 rooms and suites; two outdoor pools; an indoor pool; deli, coffee shop, pizzeria and a T.G.I. Friday’s restaurant; relaxing sitting areas; arcades; three gift shops; and more.
