Kaptur touts Ohio's 'Bloom Coast'

Tuesday, 09 May 2006

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur has launched a new effort to make tourism flower along the Lake Erie Coast.

The Democratic congresswoman from Toledo presented the Maumee Valley Growers' flower of the year, the Purple Trailing Petunia, to Cedar Point's CEO, Richard Kinzel, to mark Cedar Point's opening.

Kaptur hoped the gesture would draw attention to Cedar Point's well-known landscaping and theme parks and help her efforts to promote Lake Erie's Ohio coastline as the "Bloom Coast."

"Our hope is to broaden tourism on Lake Erie's south coast and that this partnership will grow into an annual effort, organized by Maumee Valley Growers and Lake Erie Coastal Ohio," Kaptur said. "Coastal Ohio is also working with (Toledo) Botanical Gardens, (Erie) Metroparks and growers of native species to plan for native species being featured along scenic byways. Perhaps what will come of all this is native species highway plantings and a changing 'Flower of Year' for municipalities along the byway."
