Zugspitz

Hello,

I'm new here. I have read that in Cedar Point was a ride named "Zugspitz". Was that a himalaya type ride? Have anyone some photos of this ride?

Zugspitz was a Himalaya type ride. I don't think I have any photos, but I remember it being close to the Space Spiral about where Troika now sits, but closer to the beach.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

I have no memory of this ride.

Wasn't there also a spinner in that general area that was somewhat like a carnival Gravitron? I vaguely remember it from when I was a kid. I think it was partially set into the ground, you leaned up against the walls and it spun and the floor dropped down. I believe it was right next to the Kiddy Dodgems where Chaos is now.

Given the location, was Zugspitz removed for Avalanche Run or Kid Arthur's Court? Or was it before that? I don't remember it.

*EDIT* The ride I was thinking of was the Rotor, I found it. *** Edited 11/4/2005 1:04:45 AM UTC by Jeremy Sell***

I do believe that there was Rotor in the spot currently occupied by Chaos. Before Chaos was Schwabinchen.

From what I remember Zugspitz co-existed with Jumbo Jet for awhile but I don't remember the exact year it was removed. It may have been removed when Wildcat was moved to the Avalanche Run location, but I don't really remember that either.

What I do remember is that Zugspitz ran faster then the current Himalaya at CP, as a young kid I remember getting massive airtime on that ride. It scared me at first, but then I thought it was pretty cool and rode the ride over and over.

I'll have to look through my CP photo collection when I have the time, it could be that I do have a photo of the ride somewhere.

I rode Zugspitz in 1966, and I believe it only lasted 1 or 2 seasons. Something tells me it came from Boblo, but I could be wrong.

The Zugspitz was located right adjacent to the Space Spiral - close to the beach. It was made by MACK and was just a Super Himalayia ride or Music Express (same thing). It was removed around 71' and the Matterhorn was set up in it's place. When the Jumbo Jet came in - the Matterhorn was moved to it's present location. Eventually the Jumbo Jet was sold to a park in new england and the "new" Wildcat was set up there. The "new" Wildcat was moved to its present location when the Schwabinchen & Bayren Curve were moved and or sent to Vallyfair. The Electric Go-Kart ride was originally set up near Sealand on the NW side (where the diving tank is now) it was removed to make way for #1 Wildcat (that was eventually moved to Valleyfair). Whew

Well Jim, since you seem to know your stuff I have a question that has been on my mind for a while. I have this post card which is a view from Space Spiral looking back. The photo was taken around 1970 because Dodgem is there but Corkscrew is not. It looks like Super Himalaya is nestled back in behind the Dodgem structure. Does anyone know if that is it, and if so, how long it was there for?

We'll miss you MrScott and Pete

Yes - the Super Himalayia was set up new in 1972 right behind the Dodgem that was also set up new in 72. The Himalayia was eventually moved to where the Matterhorn was near the beach (I forgot that till just now). Then it was moved across from the Gemini - then it was moved to it's present location. The Matterhorn came when Himalayia moved across from Gemini (sorry I forgot that).

The reason for the very first move was to make room for the new Imax theatre.

It was 1970, the year that C.P opened 10 new rides and a new midway in honor of their centennial. The new midway included the Himalaya, Dodgem, Monster, Western Cruise, Frontier Lift, Bayern Kurve, Schwabinchen, and a new station for C.P.&L.E.R.R.

The Matterhorn, Super Himalaya, and the Jumbo Jet all lived in that beach area at the same time, I'm gonna say '74. The Matterhorn wasn't moved to it's present spot until the Tiki Twirl went away.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I do beleive "Rotor" was actually called the Hell Hole.

OK-----and I thought I was never wrong !!!

I had to wade through snow to the garage - go upstairs and sift through old boxes and you are right - I was wrong - I was guessed at the dates, here's what my files say.

Super Himalayia - installed new in 70. Moved near the beach when they put up IMAX.

Matterhorn - new in 72 - put up near beach. It was then moved to where the TIKI TWIRL was (near Scrambler) - yes you are right.

Before that the Scamper was at that location behind the boiler house where Matterhorn is now - the Scamper was a little Wildcat - wood track. Scrapped to make room for TIKI.

The TIKI TWIRL was originally the Calypso - located where the diving tank is now. It was re-themed the TIKI and relocated. The Electric go-Karts were located there also but sold. The "new " Wildcat was put up where the diving tank is now - in 70. Behind all that near the beach was the TWISTER - which was relocated to where the Wave Swinger is now - then sold.

Western Cruise station was originally where Coasters rest. is now. It was moved to where the Iron Dragon station is now in 70. This ride was new in 64 and the boats were made by Sam Conti of Port Clinton. This was the new midway in 70.

Schwabinchen - new in 70 - moved to where old Rotor was.

Giant Wheel - new in 72. Moved cause of MF.

Dodgem II - new in 70.

Dodgem I (old) - the original was put in in 65 (across from Sky Ride east station) right near the shooting gallery) Dodgem I (new) was put in around 75 or 77 - near Witches Wheel.

Finally - don't forget the 2 Trabants. They were both located just a few feet away from where the Scrambler is now. One was scrapped and new one put up. I should have kept quiet. Cause I can't let it drop - I got to keep looking till I drop.

OH YES - the Frontier Lift was new in 68.

Nice history fact. Thanks!

This is probably well before everyone here's time, but does anybody know anything about a ride called Aero Joy Plane? It operated on the beach next to the Cyclone during the 1930's, but I don't know what type of ride it was or what it was like.

Has someone got photos now????

It's an old topic, I try to ask again, because there are some new people here.

Checkout this 8mm film of the park in 1963 on youtube. There's about 6 different 9 minute cuts. It might not answer your question, but great footage!!!!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P0Pv84cPWU
