Bon Aire section and other exterior changes to Hotel Breakers

Oh my gosh, I can see right into the room(s) where I usually stayed. Second or third floor, top of the stairs, turn left to the very first room in the front corner. I liked those rooms, they were a little more spacious and had two windows, providing a nice view of Top Thrill Dragster and Magnum through the trees. Especially at night when I could lay in bed and see TTD so brightly lit. I always tried to request one of those, and usually it would work out.

Bye bye, Bon Air... Sniff....

Count me as one of the few that actually enjoyed staying in Bon Air. I'll never forget the last time we stayed there. Well, actually, there are parts of it that I forget.

I think Bon Aire is just going to become a parking lot.

Is losing those rooms a big loss to the park? I don't really pay attention to hotel bookings, but if they never filled up, I don't think losing those rooms is that big of a loss. It would actually be less upkeep and maintenance.

Oh my goodness, they would fill up first. They were among the cheapest. And especially so at the height of the season. Now, early spring? Maybe not so much.
In the past I would start my week stay on Mother's Day and Bon Air would be full of student groups that had traveled to CP for the weekend. There would be all night parties and conversations from room to room and in the hallways, and it would get rowdy.
Then Monday night would come and what a difference. One year I swore I was the only person staying on the third floor Bon Air all week, I never saw a soul up there. In the evenings, after I was done at Fridays, (read: after they kicked me out) I would head to my room and it would more than a little creepy/quiet up there. All I could think of was The Shining...

Yikes! The Shining is the only Stephen King book that actually scared me.

Do you guys know that the Breakers was actuality the first choice for the location to film The Shining?

Um... Is Shinning the porno version of Shining?

And is it true the producers found Breakers rates too high?

Pete, I've read that before, but can't substantiate it through any reading about the production. The rumor most likely originated in IMDb's trivia section, where validity has always been questionable. Sorry, huge Kubrick aficionado here. :)

Though it was announced over a year ago, seeing Bon Aire demolished has me really psyched for booking my stay for this year. Now hopefully they can keep Friday's kitchen open just a wee bit later on nights the park closes at midnight, as I totally emphathize with RCMAC being kicked out.

Apparently the new cabins from this past season make up for that.

The Shinning is actually the name of the Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors parody of The Shining! (Bart: "Oh, you mean the Shining!" Willie: "Shh! Do you want to get sued?") :P

I think it's great Hotel Breakers is being refreshed in this way, and I also like that it's almost done! With how much the refresh cost, I'll be happy to see what they do over the next few years with that percentage of their budget (outside of whatever they got out of Knott's Soak City San Diego), hopefully allocated to new rides across the chain, but maybe building a new hotel at Carowinds or another park? I know the budget for Hotel improvements supposedly didn't come out of the new attractions budget, but a similar amount made in future years can go toward it! :) Fifteen to twenty million a year is a lot of money for that and could explain the rumours flying about multiple parks (Wonderland, Cedar Point, and Kings Dominion being the strongest) getting coasters in 2016 when recently only one Cedar Fair property gets a major new (steel/B&M) coaster each year (2012: Leviathan, 2013: GateKeeper, 2014: Banshee, 2015: Fury 325).

It appears that the demolition to Bon Aire stopped, and there could be plastic secured to the open end. It's dark there now and there are lights which appear to be inside the structure.

Last edited by Chris49,

This morning I think some of the plastic is removed. Perhaps there was just a pause to strip furnishings from the rooms before knocking more down.

I was wondering about that plastic myself, and they sure made a clean cut where the demolition stopped. That is not typical of demolition work and I wonder if they decided to keep part of Bon Air after all.

The demolition appears to have been halted in a very clean line, perhaps indicating that this is all that will be tore down.

Might we just be seeing a new section that connects Bonair to the tower with a new public space on that corner?

I was wondering why a building being demolished was all lit up last night.

Maybe a temporary use of Bon Aire for housing the employees from Cedars because it will be demolished and other housing hasn't been built off site yet? They cut it off from Breakers to keep employees and guests separate? Thats a lot of work to just do that...just throwing it out there.

I can see that they removed the connection to the main hotel. Maybe they are going to repurpose the building. Possibly for employee housing. But I thought I remembered either Matt or someone in park management saying they wanted all On Point housing gone soon. I know Cedars' days are numbered, probably will be demolished next fall.

Maybe they are going to put an elevator there were they cut off part of the bon aire to make it ada compliant.

I think demolition stopped to completely remove the first portion of debris, before knocking down anymore of the building to maintain a clean site. That clearly cut end to the remaining portion may have been made for safety reasons, so nothing is hanging over and not fall below. There are guidelines to demolition as well as construction and you never know when OSHA may show up.

Thabto's avatar

That would make sense.
