1994 Coaster Death?

Sunday, July 18, 2004 2:01 AM
http://www.rideaccidents.com/coasters.html If you scroll down to 1994 it says this: Saturday, May 28, 1994 - A 14-year-old boy died after riding a roller coaster at an amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio.

Does anyone know if this was Cedar Point? I don't really know anyother amusement parks in Sandusky that aren't in Cedar Point.

I remember reading another thread about that. I think we all agreed that the account was false.

Edit: Now I remember. The article says after riding a coaster. There have been a few deaths over the years, I believe one last year, of heart attacks and so on.

The boy had a heart condition, if I remember correctly- The park warns you to not ride if you have heart conditions.

Up to date, there have been no fatalities at Cedar Point due to coaster malfunction or employee error.

It was a 14 year old girl. She died after riding wildcat due to an unknown heart condition. I remember it well because I was at the park that weekend.

Not sure how many times Jeff has to say it but people have never ever died as a direct result of a ride at CP. It has always been due to unknown chronic health conditions.

In the mid sixties Cedar Point had a Stagecoach ride which was an actual stagecoach pulled by a team of four horses. Remember reading in the Columbus papers that this overturned killing the driver and at least one passenger. If there are any oldtimers who remember this incident or the year that it happened please reply.

Nobody was killed in the stagecoach accident, but thirteen people were injured and the ride was immediately discontinued. It happened in the late 60's. *** Edited 7/24/2004 4:09:08 PM UTC by Thonolan***

I doubt it's true, because as Jeff said...

Many people have died after riding Cedar Point rides, but never because of any kind of mechanical failure or human error.
But, if the kid got loose and jumped out of the train, then I guess it's possible. Do you have the exact address for where you read it?

Ralph Wiggum's avatar I've heard several variations of the Mine Ride story, although I have no factual evidence of whether or not it's true. I believe the version I've heard the most is that the kid's father pushed him out and he fractured his skull, but like I said, that's just one version of the story.

DemonDroppin''s avatar The Mine Ride story has been around for awhile. I remember riding it when I was really little (long before seat belts were added) and my mom would always hold onto me tight right at the part when the train makes the sharp turn and heads over the lagoon because she would say that's the part of the ride that a boy fell out, by slipping out of the restraint bar and into the water. Maybe a boy did fall out and was injured but didn't actually die, who knows?

Pete's avatar I seem to remember that a kid did fall out of the Mine Ride, but lived. There was a story on a TV news show about this shortly after it happened. Not sure about the circumstances, I don't remember if the kid's father pushed him out or not.

Jeff's avatar Yeah, that was the story. He lived, relatively unhurt. He also sued the park and Arrow. Arrow settled while the park fought it and won.

I worked on the Giant Wheel in 1994-1995. If I remember correctly, someone died on the Wildcat during the summer of 1994. I believe it was a band member from a HS in Michigan and he had an undiagnosed heart condition.

funny this came up when it did. I was having a discussion with my girlfriend about ride safety (she wont ride any ride because they are unsafe) she was saying shes sure accidents happen all the time but the parks some how magically cover it up. pay the families off to keep quite and some how to hundreds of park guests and employes never hear or see it and/or keep quite about it. that is a silly idea if you ask me.

That's what happens every time a ride "breaks down" or is "down for wind".

It's not magic...they're scraping up the body parts.

The parts are then fed to the tigers from Jungle Larry's show, which are kept in the basement of the Good Time Theater.

She's absolutely right.

Wild Cat actually had two similar fatalities that happend a couple of seasons apart. Both were just very tragic pre-existing heart condition situations but the coincidence of them both happening during or immediately at the end of that particular ride was very surreal.
