Aging out

randi b's avatar

I tried to do a search to no avail as I'm sure this has been discussed. I wondered what rides people used to ride that they no longer can due to getting older & what symptoms they have experienced. I have lost another ride every year over the last few years due to them making me nauseous or giving me severe headaches. I was really sad the year I lost Magnum, & then 2 years ago lost the ability to ride Gemini. I'm currently left with only the two smooth ones, Millennium & Dragster, but even getting afraid of those.

I still enjoy being at the park, but I experience it differently than I did 10 years ago. I really hope the park starts adding some mid range or dark rides back into the mix (that don't get you wet). I know it's not a theme park, but the focus on only high thrill rides (probably great for publicity) is making it harder to people my age to enjoy spending a whole day there. (I mostly go to the beach).

Magnum, smooth?

I assume that they meant Millennium, since she mentioned losing Magnum two years ago.

Oops, fixed that :)

Was gonna say.. Not sure if you meant Maverick or what. Maverick can be pretty rough, though. :)

I take non drowsy motion sickness medicine and space rides out. That works well for me. Plus I avoid Gemini and Magnum. I find those two coasters to be pieces of junk anymore. I do fine with all the rest in moderation. More variety of amusement rides/experiences would be nice, but I go to other parks to get that. At this point, I'm losing hope that CP is ever going to do anything different in that area.

I've been mostly done with spinning carnival rides for a while. I really have to pace myself on things like Matterhorn, Super Himalaya, Tiki Twirl, Monster, and Lake Erie Eagles. Witches Wheel is right out. I've found Troika is not bad. A couple years ago, my daughter convinced me to ride one of the Balloon Race rides with her. The op apologized to me afterwards because she really wanted to stop the ride for me, but said she was only allowed to stop it for emergencies. I must have really looked pitiful, even though I didn't feel that bad.

Consider using prophylaxis. No...not that kind. Two tablets of Dramamine, two ibuprofen, and two Tums about 30-60 minutes before your first ride. If you are staying longer than 6-8 hours, consider a second dose. Also, keep yourself hydrated. Drink lots of water in the days leading up to a visit as well as during the visit.

Really feel no different experiencing rides, can go on everything I always did, flat rides and coasters both. The only age related difference I feel now is my hangovers last a little longer!

Yea, I only rode Maverick the first year & what a headache :(

Altor-nice advice thanks. I have tried Antivert, but I l should keep trying others until I find the right mix. (I should know this!).

Pete-Lol-you haven't changed ;) Wish I hadn't missed you when I was enjoying that Sangria on opening day at that place on the trail. That was sooo good!

Maverick has new restraints. It's fantastic. Arguably best ride in the park now.

^ Agreed. Before this year, Maverick was one I only rode about once a year because of the head banging. The new restraints have allowed me to ride it about half a dozen times this year with a moderate amount of head banging. And on Saturday, I finally figured out that if I pull down on those restraints during the ride so they are tight against my shoulder, there was nothing to hit my head and neck on.

Randi, yes, that would have been cool! The Full Throttle Moon Shine they have there is really good as well, has become my go to choice at CP this year if I want an adult beverage while in the park.

I love the S'loonshine. It's really good. I think Peach might actually be my favorite.

And I see you all the time, Pete. I'm just usually going the opposite way and you're across the midway. We've waved a few times haha.

I did try the new DraftServ on Friday night, and while it's really cool to be able to walk up and top off your beer whenever you want, so long as you've got money on the card - it actually costs $1 more than getting a draft at Red Garter, or the stand by the sky ride. Doesn't make sense, as they don't have to pay a bartender to do the pouring, but hey - it's a cool little novelty.

The loopers mess me up nowadays. I still ride them, but sparingly except for Gatekeeper, which is so, ahem, docile that I can do several consecutive rides.

Fortunately, the hypers and gigas (which were always my favorites) are no problem.

I will say, however, that I did a marathon session of 10 consecutive rides on Leviathan last year with Fast Lane Plus on a slow day where the FLP line was empty. After the 10th ride, I suddenly felt very sick, had to leave the park, had to sit in my car for awhile before I was feeling able to drive back to my hotel, and was in bed for a few hours thereafter.

Back row of Wicked Twister scares a pantload out of me, but other than that I can take it.

I'm 68 and still doing OK with the rides. Raptor ,which used to be my favorite ride back in the 90s',now is ridden very rarely because of the helix at the end, those now get to me. I like GateKeeper except for the ending helix. Been riding Rougarou where as I didn't ride Mantis too much,in 1996 I rode Mantis a lot but when they added the first hill brake in the 96/97 off season,It changed the ride too much. I have no problems with TTD,MF,Mav,MeanStreak,Magnum,Gemini. I don't do flat spinning rides, even Cedar Downs will sometimes affect me. Always do a motion sickness pill upon entering the park. Sylvia in first aid knows me well, gets out the pills and writes my name down when I walk in the door.

I find that Maverick is my 'once per trip' coaster now that I am getting a little older.

I haven't been there this year, but hopefully the new restraints will make for a more enjoyable ride.

While I HAVE had problems with head-banging in the past, most of my age-related problems seem to be due to G-LOC or grey-outs... I think that a good meal and staying hydrated is the best thing to do for that.

I live far away and only get one trip per year, so I opt to go at Halloweekends so that I can still enjoy the shows and haunts if I happen to have a problem on the rides.

It sure sucks getting old!

I assume Mean Streak was aged out decades ago? That is the roughest one out there

Age? I couldn't even ride Mean Streak at/before 18. Oww.

I didn't know that; I'll have to give it shot again!

And yes, Mean Streak was a goner a long, long, long time ago...

TTD & MF are so smooth, but I don't know how much longer I'm willing to risk capillaries bursting causing any hemorrhaging with all the jostling of my gray matter. I'm blonde enough as it is.

I have noticed some rides make me nauseous and dizzy. I don't think I'll be getting on Pipe Scream or Maxair again. It seems Gemini was pretty rough last time I rode it, didn't notice that before so don't know if it's me or the coaster.
