Cedar Point/Cedar Fair Dark Ride(s)

As we all know, Cedar Fair has said all of its parks will be getting Dark Rides in the next few years. Dark rides can either be true non-coaster dark rides, or roller coasters that double as dark rides. That is what got me thinking...

If you have been to Canada's Wonderland, KD or KI, you will have heard of Backlot Stunt coaster, a very fun launched family coaster, with a partly enclosed section.

I am wondering if it is possible to turn Backlot Stunt Coasters (or build new ones at parks without them for example CP) into dark ride coasters. Enclose the whole ride, and make it indoors and dark, with cool lighting, sound and fire effects! Even if it can't be retrofitted onto the existing Backlot Stunt Coasters, it may be possible to create a similar ride, teaming up with Premier Rides and maybe Triotech too. It could possibly be interactive, and have coaster elements, as well as a story and tons of theming (something Cedar Point, and multiple Cedar Fair parks lack...)

What do you think?

I'm sure we have never seen Cedar Point turn an outdoor rollercoaster into an indoor dark-ride with lighting effects and an entirely new theme...

...at least, not since 1990.

Well there are like 5 threads about dark rides out... but since another one was made: I hope something more than just a shooter style dark ride is added. a stunt coaster would be a much better fit.

Backlot Stunt Coaster works just fine out in the open. Although KIs totally enclosed roller coaster (I can't think of the name of it) is pretty cool and doesn't have a huge footprint.

^yes, it does work in the open, but my point is IF they want a dark ride, they could make it one, because it is already partly dark and has the PERFECT theming for a dark ride. Just get premier for the coaster, Triotech for the interactive dark ride features and BAM! you have a great ride!

Meh. If the goal is to have a dark ride for the sake of having a dark ride then I guess so. I'd rather see them create something new from the ground up if a dark ride is the way to go.

The reason I had thought of Backlot Stunt coaster for being a dark ride coaster is because:
a) 3 of Cedar Fair's big parks already have the ride, and wouldn't need a whole new ride, just a conversion (CW, KI, KD).
b) Car Chase with cool helicopter/fire/James Bond like theming that a big chunk of Backlot Stunt Coaster has would be an AMAZING theme for a dark ride!! See 0:31-0:43 of this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mZCxcKDnX_E
c) I think a launched family coaster with an interactive dark ride is way better than a non coaster Triotech dark ride, or something just in little moving carts.

I think you're referring to Flight of Fear?

My problem with a lot of enclosed rides is the building looks awful from the outside. Remember Disaster Transport? That tin shack blocked such an awesome view. That area of the park looks so much better with the view of the lake opened up. If they are gonna do this, please make the building blend in somehow.

ROUNDABOUND.

Yes that's the one. You are totally right about the outside of the building too. I have felt the exact same way about the roller coaster repair area and the accompanying building in the middle of Mean Steak for the last decade or so. It is such an eyesore. I couldn't imagine a ride in a similar building in a high profile area of the park.

I actually had forgotten about the whole Amusement Dark deal. No mention of it was brought up on the Q2 conference call by Ouimet or Witherow or any of the companies who attended the conference call. I'm starting to think the dark ride deal is hitting the backburner. It may be replaced by their recent dedication to VR. It may offer a more significant yield, or more value to the guests they're trying to market towards.

No mention could very possibly mean CP or other parks are getting them soon. Do you remember at CoasterMania that Tony said Mean Streak was off limits at the Q&A? Well, turns out that something is going to happen with Mena Streak, and Tony didn't want any information being pried away. This may be the same with the dark rides. They are making it "off-limits" for discussion, so there aren't any unwanted leaks. We saw it with Mean Streak, and that may be what is happening with Dark Rides...

Possibly, but usually with these calls & whatnot they usually will somewhat push their agenda/buzzwords. Look at all the funforward stuff that they pushed during the call/investor presentation. Amusement Dark was something they even put a trademark on, but it's been silent since Knotts.

I'll wait, but it's def something I hope gets brought up over the next few meetings/press releases/Q&A. It was hyped for awhile, but nothing now.

Bring back the Pirate Ride and Earthquake...neither of those were eyesores.

I loved riding both, but I think that, as they were, they would just be out of date for today's park goers.

I dunno. The restored, vintage funhouse with whale entrance seems to be a pretty big hit with the Kennywood crowd.

True, but ... KW celebrates history (Noah's Ark, Racer, Jack Rabbit*, Auto Race) while CP, while not ignoring its history, is more about the rides (Top Thrill Dragster, Maverick, GateKeeper, Valravn). IMHO.

To a certain degree, that is true.

That's true, to a certain extent. Though CP does try to provide loving care for the vintage rides the park decides to keep.

Admittedly I'm a geezer with questionable brain functioning, but I can't think of any Cedar Point rides that are as old as Kennywood's Noah's Ark or Racer. (I am leaving aside the carousels.) WildCat was removed, in part, because the manufacturer no longer provided replacement parts, while Kennywood continues to make replacement parts for its Kangaroo riide, for example.

Blue Streak is a perfect example of not embracing the vintage rides. Kennywood and
Waldameer both do a great job. I know that isn't CP strategy and they couldn't keep up with the capacity. But Blue Streak was a better ride when it was the an ACE classic coaster.
