Cedar Point's 2011 ride will target thrill seekers

Let's hope whatever it is, it will require a whole new section instead of just one topic. ;)

Haha, Jeff moves across the country and still gets quoted for a Register article. The article states that he suggested a Huss Top Spin as a possibility. I wonder how accurately his statements were written.

Anticipointment the thrill ride has apparently been ordered already.

I'm with ya 99er, a ZacSpin makes perfect sense given CF's cash position, while it would be the first in North America. I also think given MM's quest for most coasters, it will be a coaster and not a thrill ride.

99er was kidding. The throughput on them is horrendous. Though it is a very fun ride. It looks unassuming, but it's a pretty intense ride. Maybe it wouldn't be to bad if they put 2 side by side like Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom or Primeval Whirl at Animal Kingdom. But, I wouldn't hold your breath. The circuit is so short that you only have one car on the circuit at any given time. 1 loading 1 in circuit and 1 unloading. 8 people per "car/train." The circuit is less than a minute. You spend more time loading and unloading than you do actually riding. I think best case scenario you get about 400 people per hour. So even with a side by side installation your only looking at about 800pph.

What great news! Thrill ride in 2011!

The way he said it like 'let me put it to you this way, we focused on the family market in 2010, we are focusing on the thrill seeker in 2011' makes it sound like it is going to be intense.

Is he bluffing when he says "there's more to thrill rides than coasters"? I hope so!

Anybody actually found the text of the article? I got a link to the Register teaser from another source this morning, and looked at every page of the "online newspaper" but found no trace of the actual article.

Looks interesting, can't wait to see some of the ideas that spring up. :P

Rideman, make sure that you are looking at the May 16th newspaper and not the 17th. That messed me up for a moment. It should be right on the front page.

I wonder if the word "ordered" originated with the newspaper or with the park. To me, that word has the connotation of picking something off the shelf, rather than having something designed.

The path you tread is narrow, and the drop is sheer and very high.

Great. User Interface FAIL. I checked that but the teaser was clearly dated May 17th so I figured I was just getting really fresh headlines.

Thanks!

I agree. "ordered", his quote about having more to thrill rides than coasters, the logistics of the layout where Demon Drop was, and all this talk about 'thrill', seem to be pointing much more towards a flat than a coaster.

You're making me drool already CP! I'm dreaming of something in the 500 plus feet tall area with no over the shoulder restraints.

See ya at Coastermania in less than three weeks!

My Guess.......Intamin Zac Spin........ the electrical building is still still set up where demon drop use to be. Besides Zac Spin would fit the DD's former location perfectly.

Nah. We design very complex, custom-built stuff here, and we still use that term. Placing an "order" is nothing more than officially agreeing to pay for a product or service.

Jason, you make some very valid points about the ZacSpin, no doubt. But as I recall Intamin does have a larger model available, which could provide a larger capacity and longer ride time. The DD space is a perfect match, and DD's capacity was nothing to write home about either.

It's not what I'd want to see in 2011. The new B&M prototype or a recapturing of the speed record would be sweet, but given the economy and CF's debt, it's (imho) either a small thrilling coaster or a flat thrill ride. (time will tell). I just don't see a $20 million+ coaster as much as I'd love to see one.

Speed record would be tough, it's going to be pushing 150 mph when Ferrari World opens.

A ZacSpin would be cheap, Intamin (which is almost a requirement now-a-days) and, being the companies 18th coaster, first of its kind around here, and 4D, easy to market.

I'm like you Tom, I'd love to see them slap up a huge B&M, but it's doubtful.

I don't think the speed record would be tough, just expensive. If the station were to use the old DD space, it could launch towards the parking lot, go over the entrance, and then back down the other side of the lot and through the park to the station. If it's going to be a thrilling coaster, I just can't see anything else but a ZacSpin. We'll know more obviously when markings start to appear.

I am going with, Intimidator 505 from B&L. Why not? They are coming to Coaster Mania right? Kidding on this but it would be cool. I still think the fact that B&L is coming for C.M. it has something to do with 2011.

I'm so glad Dick gave this hint right with the park opening. Gives you just one more thing to ponder about while at the park all season long.

Now, finding a footer by demon drops old spot and one out towards the beach would really be nice! :)

In the first picture you see Inferno (the one I rode) located at Terra Mitica. Here are 2 videos I did. #1 #2 The circuit time is better determined by the first video. Dispatch to break is about 45 seconds. RCDB lists is at 1:00. I think that's being generous.

The next picture is Kirnu. It is the same as Inferno. It lists the time at 42 seconds and the capacity at 640pph. I highly doubt you would ever achieve that. In order to do that, you would have to have a car leave the station every 45 seconds.

The third picture is Insane. This is the larger model. This one appears as though it may have a brake block in the middle of the ride. This would help with the capacity assuming that dispatches were happening very quickly. RCDB lists the capacity of Insane at 800pph. The ride length is 75% longer in length than the smaller models. Though, as you can see in my video, most of the time is spent on the lift. It's at about the 25 second mark when the coaster is under the power of gravity. That being said I would guess the circuit time is maybe 15-25 seconds longer than the smaller model. The car still only holds 8 people. So, at 800pph, you'd need a car dispatching every 36 seconds to achieve this theoretical capacity.

Inferno and Kirnu only have 3 cars. RCDB does not list how many cars Insane has. I suppose if you had 5 total cars, you could always be unloading 2 and loading 2 as the 5th was on the circuit. I'm not sure there is room for that many cars in the station. There certainly was not that much room on Inferno. That could buy you the time you needed to possibly get the 800pph. However, it seemed to have a lot of minor delays and downtime while we were at the park. At one point, a car didn't come back to the station enough to hit the proper sensors. This shut the ride down for almost an hour. Though I don't speak fluent Spanish, I got the impression that this was not an uncommon occurrence.

Now wait. Is the picnic pavilion on the Demon Drop side closed?

Edit: Answered my own question. Yes. Hmmm...
