Magnum Memories

I know that this was posted a long time ago, but I thought we could refresh our memories by posting them again especially for the new members that didn't get to here them.

my Magnum Memory goes all the way back to 1989, which was when i graduated from high school...
our physics classes went to CP in may and we were all excited about going on the huge new coaster... the only problem was that it rained practically the whole day and i didn't get a chance to ride it during the time that it wasn't shut down...
later in the summer, some friends and i went back to CP... figuring nothing would stop us from finally riding Magnum... the only problem was that we went when the lift chain was broken and the ride was down the whole day...
not to be denied, we made one last trip late in the summer and finally were able to ride... i think we rode it 3 or 4 times that day and the ride has never disappointed me since.

After traveling 310 miles door to door, my first ride is always the Magnum, it is also the last ride each time I visit. The thrill is never gone. I even spent my 25th wedding anniversary at the park. I am one CP junkie. The biggest thrill for me is night riding, even though you know every twist and turn, there is no comparison to night riding.

While being on Magnum with Dan for his 1000th season pass career ride was special, well for him anyway, I have to say that entire day was the most memorable I've ever had.

There were only a few hundred people in the park total. The wind was blowing so hard off the lake that breathing on any part of the ride until the turn-around was difficult.

Magnum ran with only one train that day, an event that no one could remember happening before, at least not in the last five years.

When the rain slowed to a drizzle, they dispatched the single train. It barely made it up the second hill. I'm talking it crawled up that hill.

The next cycle, we got on, but they would not dispatch the train unless it was completely full. The train crested the second hill at a rate slower than it crosses from the station to the lift.

Jeff in May they only had 2 trains running is that because there aren't as many people in the park?

Yes, two train operation is common on slow days.

When I rode Magnum after a light drizzle. A mist was hanging in the air and the trains where going a little over 80 MPH. Then when I went on the secound time we got stuck on the lift. The front of the train was just starting to crest the hill and when it started up again it couldn't have taken more than a secound to go over. My first ride was notible as well, but this was so fast I almost lost my but from so much airtime.

well my greatest magnum memory was of course the first time i rode it just last year. Basically until 2 years ago I was scared to death of coasters. I started to break my fear by riding Gemini and Iron Dragon and that disaster ride. But Last year I went on a rampage riding every ride in the park. I was afraid simply because of heights. Well anyway best memories of magnum the rush for the first time falling down the first hill. the joy of hanging out the car on the pretzel. and the serious air time on the bunny hops on the way back. I can't see how people say all there is to the magnum is the first hill, let us not forget to sit in the front seat, wear your seat belt loose and get airtime on the way back!!

I'd love to ride a rollercoaster in the eye of a hurricane...

Looking at every coaster that has been built since Magnum, there has been alot of innovation that surpases Magnum's stats. When you compare just the stats of other coasters to that of Magnum's, Magnum logically should be pushed back off of the number one spot on the web polls long time ago. But it is not yet happened. And why hasn't it happened? I'm not dissing the Magnum here because it is my all time favorite ride, but I continues to baffle me that each year it remains number one beating out all of the B%M's and everything else on the polls. And to add, each year it's poll number become stronger and stronger, which is even more fascinating. This ride is now going on 11 years old and it still gets reviews and poll numbers like it is brand new. I guess it's just something unexplainable about this ride as to why it is still number one outbeating everything that has been built around the country since it was first opened. I still do believe that when all of the web polls for the 2000 season come out late next year, Magnum will again rise to the top spot on the list with even stronger numbers than this year.

It's not a mystery of why Magnum is number one. It delivers everything a great coaster should, and is just plain fun and exciting. Magnum delivers the timeless thrills that the greatest coasters in history have. When it gets old it'll be just as loved and respected as the greatest classic rides of today are, such as the Coney Island Cyclone.

My fav Magnum memory was definitely Closing Day of '98. I was in the last train of the night/year and seated in seat 6.1L. The entire train was filled with coaster nuts so obviously we were gonna be loud.

And loud we were.

The entire ride was surreal. After dropping down into complete darkness, we went up and over the second hill and time seemed to stop. We were just perched over the hill, 150 (and some odd) feet, looking out into the pitch blackness of Lake Erie. As we dropped down into the first tunnel, I knew that ride would be one of the greatest ever. We screamed throughout the rest of the course, rampaging along the beach and barreling through the last bunny hills. When we arrived in the station, and I could barely yell, I had screamed so much. The entire train was clapping and cheering with delight. Then, the ride op came over the microphone and said, "Shhhhh. You guys wanna go again?" I couldn't believe it. A reride on Magnum. Needless to say, the last *last* ride was just as good. That will probably be forever my favorite Magnum Memory.

That would have to be its inagural year. I was 8 years old and scared to death the whole line and the whole lift, right up to the point where we crested the first hill and I instinctively put my hands up and just yelled, "like Chunk from Goonies," as I put it then, for the whole rest of the ride.

I only rode the Magnum once and I remember that first hill.. it's so high up in the air that I have a hard time breathing (which is why I don't ride it now) this was back in 1991. I screamed during the entire ride and someone 2 cars back said to me "I think they heard you all the way to Cleaveland".. I scream very loud.

^ - Magnum does not get high enough in the air to have any noticeable change in the Oxygen levels of the air.

I've only been on Magnum a few times. It wasn't until about 2 summers ago I ever rode roller coasters because of my fear of heights. Last year I worked to remedy that problem with a CP season pass.

My fiancee gets headaches when she rides Magnum so my first encounter wasn't until June last year when I visited CP with other friends. It was very fun and exciting really. That first lift hill is pretty high and make me very nervous. But, I'm not going to get over my fear of heights with 2 feet planted on the ground.

It's interesting how people have such skewed perspectives on coasters. People claim to have less oxygen at the top... others have claimed that from the top of MF you can see the curvature of the earth... even when I was a little kid and rode Blue Streak for the first time, I went back to my school and told my friends that it had to be going at least 150 mph.... I suppose it's the fear and adrenaline that makes us feel these exaggerated things.

As far as Magnum, I have so many memories. I know its a great coaster when after 288 rides (just since '03) I still never get tired of riding it. Every seat and every ride seems to offer a different experience. During the day the views of the lake are magnificent, at night, the darkness off the peninsula adds an extra thrill. You go from the rush of the first drop, to the great banked second drop, into my favorite airtime hill on any coaster.... then the mild to wild (depending on the trims) turnaround, and then the increasing ejector air on each of the returning bunny hops.

In the 10 years after Magnum was built, it was cloned numerous times all around the world. After 8 years, I have yet to see a clone of the MF layout...

I think it shows you what the coaster with the greater legacy is.

I first rode Magnum back in 2004 on my first trip to Cedar Point and I thought it was amazing and it still is my favorite ride in the park and in the world. It is still in the top five 8 years after this thread came out. But I think my best memory would be this past season during Haloweekends on a Friday I rode Magnum 12 times and on 7 of the 12 ride the trim brakes befroe the pretzel turn were off and that was an awsome ride the air time was amazing especially in the last car front 1st row, I rember it was a cold friday night and that was that was the only ride that I thought gave a good ride.

I have two fond memories of Magnum. The first being the year it opened and waiting in line for 4 to 5 hours just to ride it once. I remember looking up at the first hill and the minimal structure and thinking there was no way that it was not going to fall over. the other memory was in 1993 I attended an ACE convention there and we had exclusive ride time on Maggie after the park closed on both nights. I rode it about 85 times over the two nights because there were only abour 200 of us in attendance. On the second night they also gave us ERT on Mean Streak and had all the spot lights turned off and it was during a new moon. You couldn't see your hand in front of your face out on the end of the penninsula. They also suprised us by turning of the brake run at the midway point which made the back half of Mean Streak feel like it was out of control. This was back when MS was a good ride.
