New construction markings.

I agree, but I highly doubt that they are going to be excavating right there in the middle of the midway.

That's why I suggested that they may be re- routing them.

Well, there went my hopes that Big Butter Jesus would be moved to the park. ;)

I agree that a dark ride would fill a niche, but I hope they aren't contemplating installing one at this location. One windowless shed that blocks the view of the beach is enough.

Ah we will miss the Touchdown/Butter Jesus!

Good point about a dark ride blocking the lake view. I'd prefer to see one elsewhere in the park (not sure where) and have a nice Boardwalk area (complete with a new woodie!) where all the markers are.

Too bad they can't relocate DT to another area in the park. I like that ride and know it's a favorite for children (as their first "big" coaster), even though the theming needs fixed/updated and the warehouse is a major eyesore. Maybe they'll have some mural painters come paint a beach scene on it so we don't feel like we're missing out as much, lol.

A darkride would fit in nice behind the arcade where chaos is now. There would be plenty of room to put one in there.

And in that location it wouldn't overly block the view of the beach, another plus.

The more I think about it, the more I doubt the markings are for the installation of pavers. It just seems unlikely they would begin work on something like that one month into the operating season. That type of thing is so much more easily done during the off season.

I'm definitely leaning more toward the "this must be for project 2011" camp. Given the time of the year, it's simply the answer that makes the most sense. Now, whether it's a thrilling flat, a GCI twister, or a DARK RIDE, we can only guess. :)

Two years ago they added pavers around the Hat Rack/Airbrush building during the season. The work was performed during fall weekdays.

Do you happen to remember when they painted markings for it?

I don't recall if there were even any markings. I was just making a point that work does happen during the year.

You're right.

I like my theory better. :)

I don't see why they would have re -route sewers and water lines for a basic thrill ride.

Well, unless the sewer and water lines run right under the chosen location for the "basic thrill ride".

Does anyone know how long in advance they will mark sewer/water lines if they are planning on doing work in/around them?

I'm guessing it's so architects can get out there and draw up exactly how to install the ride based on the markings.

Sewer and water lines are marked for the site design process. If any footings or anything that will penetrate the ground at a specific depth, then these have to be rerouted, removed, etc... This process usually takes place the same time as design development which is all well before a year of initial construction. At my Architecture firm, anything regarding site and utilities is done first. My guess, is CP has been planning for a few years for the 2011 project and they have starting to mark what has to be removed, rerouted, or solved.

As much as I think CP needs a dark ride, I think that is pretty much ruled out given what Kinzel said about the nature of the ride.

How big is this area that these markings cover? Does it extend from DT's area all the way to the aquatic stadium, or is it a fairly isolated spot?

In terms of Coaster v. Thrill Ride it is a relatively isolated area. That is, unless it were to be a coaster with a very small footprint like a wicked twister or ZacSpin.

Well someone with more spare time than myself needs to scope them out and map how big of an area markings have been spotted in. :) That said, they could be meaningless with regards to 2011...but if they are indeed related then the comings weeks should produce more clues sooner than later.

I don't know what to think of this being the new location for a ride! It would be too much work to relocate the Beach Entrance, the Midway, and remove the food places (especially since that french fry place gets good business). In my opinion, I have to disagree that when the park is busy that part of the park is dead because even when I go when the park is dead, that area of the park is still busy, I mean you do have MaxAir and Wicked Twister right there! They may not be 5star attractions like Dragster, Millennium, and Maverick, but a lot of people love MaxAir and Wicked Twister. My guess is that the new attraction is going to either go in Demon Drop's old place or atleast use that area as part of the ride!

I think I have seen that fry stand open twice in the past 2 years. The gazebo food stand is never that buisy eather. The only time I ever see many people in that area, is when the stunt show is letting out at the stadium.

Maxair and twister are on the other side of this midway, and ocean motion and the gate are just kind of tucked away in the corner.I think people go as far as wicked twister, and turn back the other way back to the disaster transport area.

I"m going to CP this weekend so ill have to keep my eyes open. But perhaps these markings are for something in 2012 and they will do something at the DD site this offseason,or the other way around. Taking out OM, AWE and the beach gate would take some time so maybe they do some this offseason like they did with Maverick and took out WWL the season before. Just food for thought. But I wanna see a kick ass coaster soon tho! lol

Jason Hammond's avatar

I'm not saying it's going to happen. But, if Ocean Motion were relocated, the beach entrance could be shifted north. Directly adjacent to the Coral Courtyard.
