Cedar Point's 2011 ride will target thrill seekers

^^ Actually you are slightly incorrect. The reason why people were injured is because Roller Coaster of America built the structure incorrectly leading to the riders injury. The only reason why the loop was removed is because the Gerestauler trains were made lighter and couldn't accommodate the loop because of the risk of heavy trains on the structure. I could see CP maybe putting a loop on a wooden coaster.

Un believable that this has grown to 5 pages in only a few days. These topics are always fun to watch. The "know it all kids" are the best. Thanks for posting this. Free entertainment for the next 6 months!!!

Actually, I have not really noticed much "know it alls" in this thread yet. Just those who have ideas as to what might be new. I am sure it will get really bad once more people visit the park and claim to have "heard from an employee" about the new ride.

Its Officially Not Official but yet Official!!!

The new ride is a 500ft Inverted Bathroom!! Taking the Demon Drop spot and also removing the bathrooms next door! Heard Riders a guaranteed to get wet, while some others get a mystery ride!

Edit: I would actually Love it if they put something similar to the Stingray in! I think they need a ride having a flying sensation for guests!

^Are you talking about Manta at Seaworld?

Let's Get Weird.

Actually, cooklid2345, yes, the Gerstlauer trains are lighter than the Premier trains on Son of Beast...but I suspect a bigger issue might be the flexibility (or the lack thereof) in the Gerstlauer train which would prevent the Gerstlauer train from going through the loop without bending the drawbars between cars.

Less critically, the seats and lap bars were not designed for the inversion (though it really should not have been a problem) and I suspect that Cedar Fair and Kings Island probably couldn't wait for an excuse to get rid of the loop anyway.

I'm not going to be so quick to put the blame for the Son of Beast structural failure on anybody, but the fact remains that three bents broke in the big helix.

I wondered about that on flight of fear too. Feels like if that coaster was built today it would need an over the shoulder.

I can't wait until we get our first few pictures of survey markers!!! :)

I am pretty sure that they are talking about Vekoma's newish flyer model called the Stingray. http://www.vekoma.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=27&Itemid=20

I'm not sure if I would like to see that come to CP, but I have never ridden it so I don't have any real justification for that statement.

I've been on 1 Vekoma flyer.

Dear God I hope they don't waste any money on a new one.

And the only people disappointed by StR were the ones not paying attention to all the signs prior to its announcement.

I live 5 hours away from CP and the last time I was there was before they started construction. I wasn't able to see any signs.

I live my life 2 hours, 2 minutes at a time.

Actually Flight of Fear aka Outer Limits, originally had Over the Shoulder Restraints. It operated with OTSR's from 1996 to 2000. In 2001 the OTSR's were removed and lap bars were installed.

That could very well be. Though they did say that it was a weight issue. They didn't want the heavy trains on SOB anymore and the G trains wouldn't maintain enough momentum to make it through the loop. Why go through the effort of removing the loop if you didn't have too. And why say it was a weight issue when saying that the trains weren't flexible enough would have been just as good of an answer.

We may never know. :)

<edit>

By the way, how did this turn into a SOB thread? :)

I'm starting to think it is a variation on Godwin's Law: As the length of a thread in a roller coaster discussion group increases, the probability of it turning into a discussion of Son of Beast approaches 1.

It's slightly different when it is a Cedar Point thread. As the length of a Cedar Point thread increases, the probability of it turning into a discussion of Richard Kinzel's competence approaches 1.

I think in this thread we've done both.

Maybe they are moving the Big Dipper from Geauga Lake to CP :)

(Just to prove that increased length = blaming CF for GL's demise)

Here is a great article that I located online. I could not agree more with the author. An interactive, high tech dark ride is the way to go!

http://www.themeparkinsider.com/flume/201004/1867/

Below are two examples ("Manta" & "Journey to Atlantis" @ Sea World) that would be interesting to see combined for a Lake Erie themed ride.

Wait...as much as we all want it to be one, why the debate about whether or not it's a roller coaster?

Didn't Kinzel already give it away that it's not one? Isn't the safe bet a giant flat ride in Demon Drop's place?

So, S&S Sky Swatter at Demon Drop would be my first guess, given all the problems with the giant Huss rides.

Did I read your post right? You think Sky Swatter is a more reliable ride than other Huss rides? You obviously aren't familiar with the only Sky Swatter ever built. It's been riddled with problems over the years. I found it to be a fun and intense ride. But, if you picked that thinking it would run better than other Huss rides, your in for a big disappointment.

Ergo Dick Kinzel's incompetence caused the breakdown of SoB.

That was a general assumption...I didn't know Sky Swatter was plagued with problems. I've heard of constant problems with Huss Giant Top Spins like the Crypt, and plenty of problems with the Giant Frisbee's like Delerium/Maxair. Lots of bad things about Huss in general...didn't they go bankrupt?

Whereas S&S seems like a more stable company, and I've hardly every been to CP when Power Tower or Skyhawk weren't working. I can't say the same for Maxair. Nor have I read about problems plaguing most S&S rides...

Huss is still going.

Removed comment that was meant for another thread. :)
