Cedar Point's Next Coaster: Do You Think It Would More Likely Be An Intamin Or a B&M?

This might be a stupid question - but why do parks wait so long to confirm new coaster plans? If the green track pieces are for CP's new coaster, couldn't they annouce it?

Because if you know a new coaster is coming next year, you might just postpone this year's trip.

I went to Magic Mountain just to ride X2 because I had never been on that type of ride before.

You're the exception, not the rule. Most people don't spend their spare time on a coaster nerd site like we do. :)

As 99er alludes to, most people just want to have fun at an amusement park.

Marketing is a big reason. The more hype they can build the better. People go oh wow I wonder what they are doing. The anticipation creates interest.

Of course they also work on little details before a ride is announced.

Think about it, one of the best amusement parks in the entire world is in Sandusky Ohio and is only open for half the year. And it's still one of the best. It brings people from not only all over the country but all over the world to Sandusky Ohio. I grew up near there in Willard so I know it's not a hot destination in this country, but Cedar Point makes it one. That didn't happen by accident. If they only have what every other park has then they would lose their edge. Not to mention people that live nearby CP take pride in the fact that the rides here are unlike any other, or if they aren't they at least were the first ones. There's nothing wrong with that and it gives the park easy marketing. I think even casual coaster fans appreciate that, not just enthusiasts. I strongly feel that if you wait 5 years for a coaster (which is completely fine) then put one in that's new and unique.

So by all this logic, the park should never build a wooden coaster since wooden coasters have not really offered anything "unique" in the last 50 years? Give me a break.

The park built Maverick and there was nothing really unique about that ride yet it opened and people loved it, and it still fills the queue. This is proof that the park does not need to build something outrageous to keep people happy. That said, I am not saying the park will NEVER build something new or cutting edge, I am just saying that the park does not need to make every new coaster something that has not been done before.

Wing Rider or a Wooden Coaster? I'd take the "woodie" hands down!

WindSeeker was the exception. Large swing rides are opening all across the Cedar Fair and Six Flags parks and you can't let the "#1 amusement park in the world" not have one. WindSeeker is also a nice ride to fill the gaps between coasters.

It's Cedar Point, there not going to put in a coaster you can find down the street. They have to make it unique to draw the crowds. There's a Wing Coaster in Illinois and Tennessee. Are those fans going to travel to Cedar Point to ride a coaster when one is in their backyard? No. But will they travel to Cedar Point to ride a 4th dimension where the closest besides Cedar Point's is on the other side of the country, yes.

Psst... depending on who you ask, the best coaster in the world is either The Voyage or El Toro, both of which are wood.

And considering the switch to B&M for Leviathan, perhaps they finally get it.

Switch from what? Wonderland's previous coaster is also a B&M.

Then why is X2 so popular at Magic Mountain?

According to whom? It's a ride with insanely poor capacity and, even with redesigned trains, offers a borderline violent ride in the outside seats. Oh, and at this point it has cost almost $45 million to build and maintain, while having an awful up time record.

Putting in a woodie is fine and in fact would be great but it can still be unique. No need for a woodie that is just like every wooden coaster in the country. Making it unique would be very easy if it was part of a whole boardwalk project.

Stinger, anyone?

Stinger is already the name of Dorney Park's new coaster.

Anyone within the Cedar Point market will travel to ride any new coaster that is built, especially at this point when a new coaster hasn't been built in 5 years.

I was speaking in terms of going with B&M for a giga coaster, which until the Leviathan announcement, was firmly Intamin's territory.

I have a strong hunch that Leviathan would have been Intamin's project if not for their reliability / design issues with Shoot the Rapids, Intimidator 305, TTD, Maverick, Wicked Twister, etc.

Need a new Woodie, just look at VF's Renegade, it is a great newer wooden coaster.

I am a coaster enthusiast and have zero interest in going on a 4th dimension coaster. The older I get the less I enjoy spinning on any rides, coasters included.

A winged coaster at Cedar Point would be a great addition to the park, maybe back by Mean Streak to help pull more people to that area of the park.

And? Cedar Fair has multiple Windseekers. Nobody cares if there is another ride with the same name at a different park. 98% of people who go to Cedar Point don't even know there is a Dorney Park. Six Flags has about 30 batman rides. (might be overexaggerating) Does anybody really care about those? No.

Cedar Fair is pretty good about not having more than one coaster with the same name. The only coasters with the same names are the former Paramount coasters.

^I agree with Maverick. There aren't really any coasters with the same names in the CF parks that were not previously owned by Paramount. And having multiple windseekrs is okay in my mind because they literally are called wind seeker.

Woodstock Express and Corkscrew are at multiple parks.

Maverick00's avatar

Corkscrew was named when Cedar Point was a single park and not part of a chain. Woodstock Express is the exception but that's a kiddie coaster so I don't really count it.

Well, there is that green Wing-Rider track sitting outside the ol' fabrication plant. Perhaps it's for CP. :)

Where is this at?

It's outside Cincy. The track has been there for some time, waiting for delivery. By no means is there any indication that it is going to CP; the owner is always listed as "X-Works", but it is definitely Wing-Rider track.

Coaster is a coaster. While not as bad as how Six Flags does it, they still have multiple coasters with the same at Cedar Fair parks.

Maverick00's avatar

^^Most of the rumors I've heard is that the track is either for Cedar Point or Six Flags Great Adventure.
