Disaster Transport Theme Changed

Thursday, September 30, 2010 7:07 PM

According to Disaster Transport's official web page, the theme of the ride has been converted from "Space Adventure!" to "Roller Coaster in the Dark!" They've just given up on fixing the special effects, I guess...

I don't see why they don't try to add theme like they did for Flight of Fear at Kings Island. I think that would make the ride experience while waiting in line unique.

If they're planning on keeping the ride around for another 5 to 10 years + (a big 'if' in some folks' minds, I understand), they ought to consider spending a little bit of cash and redo some of the theming.

Not talking spending a fortune here. More than adding 3D hands on the corridor walls, but less than putting in new animatronics. A theming massage, if you will. Just some intelligent replacement of elements that no longer make sense, and augmenting the remaining ones that do.

They might even find a relatively minor expenditure like this could help breathe new life into a deteriorating ride experience, perhaps enough to keep the ol' 12E around for years to come.

Okay, bad example. The giant shoe size has to go. :)

I don't see how this could possibly bode well for the ride's future.

Re-animating the dead doesn't turn out well (per Dr. Frankenstein). Let DT rest in peace - tear it down.

With this logic, maybe the Big Dipper at GL could reopen with a special "dilapidated, ramshackle" theme to it.

The path you tread is narrow, and the drop is sheer and very high.

Folks have said over and over the theming is crap and needs worked on. In other words the ride has already been a "Roller coaster in the dark" for several years. Sounds like the park is finally admitting that. I am not following how their decision to fomally abandon the theming spells its doom.

There's a pretty wide chasm between what I said and "doom".

If they're finally giving up on any up-keep (and I'm pretty sure at least some of the ride's theming has seen up-keep in recent years, however minimal), then yeah, I'd say that the ride doesn't have a very bright future.

OK. Then I need a little more explanation as to what you mean by "I don't see how this could possibly bode well for the ride's future." I read that to mean you think it is not going to be around very much longer.

Good gravy. You kids are something else. :)

By "doom", I get the impression of imminent doom. You know, certain and immediate demise. That's not what I was suggesting, or at least not what I intended to suggest. It seems, given this news, that the ride will see only a few (you know, 2, 3, 4, possibly up to 5, 6 or even 7 or more!) more seasons of operation.

With that logic I guess the future does not bode well for any of the rides.

I think it would be cool if they took the Happy Jack's theme all over the ride. Have the line pretty much like the haunt is except nobody jumps out at you. I think it would be cool to walk through detailed rooms like Happy Jacks with the lights on while waiting in line.

I think DT could go so far, in terms of themeing, as to add elements much like what you see during The Mummy ride at Universal. I'm not referring to the preshow and themed rooms, but rather the little bits of themeing that's in the main layout section. From what I can tell, they're just large 2D figures with special lighting that looks cool when you're zipping past them.

If I wasn't a Cedar Point regular, and if I didn't know the history of the ride, I would be so confused on what the ride's theme was! I mean, you walk in through an emergency exit, then you have the "Repair Bay" with flashing lights and rundown scenery. Then, you walk up these random blue stairs with absolutely no themeing. Afterward, you get loaded into your seat in this purple light, and go extremely slowly up a hill with dizzying rope lights, plunge into compete darkness, circle around some random claw looking thing, more complete darkness, and then fly past a few random mountains with a Domo doll propped in them, and then back to purple land to get unloaded. I won't be able to tell if the ride was just really crappy and worn down, or whoever created the ride and themeing was crazy...

I think they should either:

1.) Fix the ride correctly to make it an actual space adventure
2.) Change all the themeing to make it an actual dark ride
3.) Tear the thing down and build a new, better "Disaster Transport 2.0" That has good appeal from the inside AND the outside... And maybe save the iconic "12-E" section of the old building and place it on the new building. :) Just a thought

But Nickster, there is a blinking red light on the lift hill that says "Overheating" and I think that tells the storyline pretty darn well! ;)
