gci wood coaster

Ive ridden the gold striker and its 10 times better then the mean streak. its a great gci twister, its considered a family coaster, has plenty of airtime hills and sharp banks. i can see cedar point investing in a ride like this in the near future. its gotten rave reviews and only cost 9 million to build. it would be a good fit at cedar point, a ride everyone can ride and enjoy.

I agree they make a nice coaster but there are a lot of options to go the family route. Something similar to fire chaser express at Dollywood would be a nice pick for a family option. I like the idea of a record breaking multiple inversion Rocky Mountain coaster. I just don't know if CF would try something that cutting edge after the Son of Beast and also with a company with a short track record.

I hope so much Cedar Point FINALLY puts in some good wood soon... They only have two wood coasters, one that is OK and the other which is quite terrible. They have plenty of amazing steel coasters, its time to bring on the wood. GCI is perfect for this... How about an extreme version of Lightning Racer? Two very unique tracks that race/duel, able to run 4-trains between both sides for capacity.

While Lightning Racer is a fun ride, its pretty tame compared to most other GCI's... If they put their new designs into an epic racing/dueling, I would be in heaven. It would be like getting 2 wood coasters at once.

I would be ALL for burning down Mean Streak to get a nice big plot of land for this installation :)

What's this??? Another thread calling for Mean Streak's demise? ;)

Doesn't count! The discussions as of late, regarding MS, have been about it getting an Iron Mountain treatment. This is ENTIRELY different.......

Demise has been discussed before as well as changing it, but it's different ways of saying Mean Streak in its current form has got to go. It all falls under the category of: Mean Streak has serious issues as well as the highest complaints. Let's not get started again, though, I don't want to do any more multiple quotes business in one post. I was teasing about it! (winky, winky)

IF CP takes out Mean Streak, what makes you think it would be replaced with a wood coaster? After all, so many claim that CP's last wood coaster sucks so much, why wouldn't it be replaced with a steel coaster?

In fact, why would it be replaced with a coaster? With the emphasis on "family" rides why not a new "family" area? Or, since everyone is complaining about how STR is a crappy replacement for WWL, why not a new WWL-type ride? Or a dark ride? Or a new area for Luminosity--one closer to the resorts.

If CP wants a wood coaster there, MS will remain. If they tear MS down, it will be to replace it with something that is NOT a wood coaster.

I agree that the parks needs a great woodie. Blue Streak is a lot of fun, but I don't even count Mean Streak. All I want for a Christmas is a new woodie... :)

Top 5 CP Coasters: 1. Steel Vengeance 2. Millennium Force 3. Maverick 4. Dragster 5. Magnum
Coaster Count: 102

Another point as to why they wouldn't put a new wooden coaster in the footprint of an old one. People who don't visit the park frequently will see "oh wooden coaster, that's the one that sucks" mistaking it for the old one, no matter how much advertising is done

Well I disappeared for a while to spare annoying you guys, but I think Anthony has a good point made in this topic. If Mean Streak were to ever be replaced, something on the lines of Gold Striker would be Ideal for Cedar Point. I could see Cedar Point maybe keeping the height of Mean Streak and maybe keeping the same route as Mean Streak, but adding some cool turns that GCI Wooden roller coasters have in them.

That's the reason Mean Streak is the way it is. Above a certain height, wooden coasters tear themselves to shreds (see Son of Beast.) GCIs tallest coaster, I believe, is right around the 100 foot mark.

^Alright you beat me on that one CDF. How about something where it's not the tallest, fastest, wooden roller coaster, but something fun! This is what Cedar Point did with Maverick and I would love to see Cedar Point maybe do the same with Mean Streak.

Actually, GCI has been making some larger wooden coasters as of late. There's a 131' existing coaster at Europa Park and a 160' coaster being built for 2015 in China. But most of their designs do fall at or under the 100' mark. I'm still reluctant to say that CP wouldn't do something "special" if they were to ever do a new wooden coaster. I'm sure they'd shoot for some kind of record.

But CP has stated in interviews that a new wooden coaster would be harder to do with the footprint and the high maintenance that goes with them. However, I'm still on the Iron Mountain bandwagon (a completely new ride, not a Mean Streak redo). I think that if IM can prove their system works well over a long period of time (in terms of maintenance and operation) then CP might be more inclined into looking into something for the future......IF they haven't already.

Though I'm still more inclined to guess that we'll see some other kinds of rides before a new wood coaster.

I don't buy the high maintenance bit. Sure, if you think all wooden coasters require the same level of work mean streak does... But that is not the case for a well designed ride. I believe most GCI's go quite a while without needing any track work. The MF trains are easy on the structure. I think a GCI brochure I have from years ago states they have a year or two warranty on the track itself (best in industry at the time). Would not be surprised if it is even better today.

Gravity Group rides probably require quite a bit more work in comparison, at least until the PTC trains are eliminated. The new trains they use appear to track better, but not sure how well the track keeps up.

As far as land, there is plenty available. Restricted space also makes for some of the best designs.

I think a GCI will come soon, especially after the additions at other Cedar Fair parks. I just hope it's sooner then later.

That's just what has been said in the past. It seems that the biggest breakthroughs in wood coaster technology has been reducing the amount of wear and tear the trains do on the ride structure. So with all these new breakthroughs in wood coaster design, it does seem more plausible and enticing that it has in the past.

It would sure be nice to see something awesome come in the future. It's just a waiting game really.
