Mantis..

I searched and the newest thread on Mantis was from 2004, so I decided to start one :). What does everyone think of it? I think it's very underrated..It was my 2nd coaster at Cedar Point and I was very impressed.. the 6flags near me in GA has a standing coaster (The Georgia Scorcher) that I thought was great but I think Mantis could be called the best standing coaster in the world. Opinions?

First time to Cedar Point was opening day 2009, 7 hours in line for TTD, 2 rollbacks =)

I love Mantis and everyone complains on how ruff it is. I think it is a great ride and if you brace your head correctly. It is a great ride but the only thing they could improve on is the loading time. It takes at least 2 minutes and 30 seconds to load and that is pathetic. It is a great ride though. Chang is pretty good though also.

The only things I don't like are 1) Always has a much longer line than the ride really should have (slow loading times that coolkid mentioned) and 2) The G-Forces on your legs are pretty annoying.

Speaking of Mantis, it got a test seat for this year.

Mantis is a great coaster. The only problem I have is keeping my head in a position where I don't feel like a bobblehead doll on the head rests. You know how they say keep your head back the whole ride. That's hard for me to do so I lean it forward a little and it usually works until the mid course brake run. I like Mantis the way it is though. I don't ride it too much because Millennium Force is right next door, so I try to ride Mantis at least once or twice during my visit. If they ever decided to go Floorless with Mantis, I know it would take a lot of rendering, but it would be just as awesome.

The wait was extremely too long when I rode it, but it was worth it in my opinion.. As far as headbanging, I dont remember it being particularly too bad.

I like Mantis, usually only ride once a visit though. My husband isn't crazy about it. I love the first drop, for me that makes the whole ride.

"And let's also not forget--let's not forget, Dude--that keeping wildlife, an amphibious rodent, for uh, domestic, you know, within the city--that isn't legal either. "

For some reason, I rode mantis sunday and the front row was not that head banging! :) The ride was smoother. Maybe mantis should have long periods of down time more often.

Its a fun ride but its definetly my least favorite of all the bigger coasters at cp. It still can possess a unreasonable long line at times. Dont know why. There are much better rides with shorter lines.

Did the test seat come from B&M or just off the third train?

I agree, I'll take Mean Streak over Mantis any day. I think the ride was originally supposed to operate with three trains as opposed to two, which would, in theory, cut wait time down drastically, but since it is such a pain on loading time they are down to just the two trains with the third stashed away forever.

From the time I have been in the station this year, you can tell a third train would do little to no good. Each time that I saw, the 1st train was already waiting well before the ride ops were done getting everybody set in the 2nd train. Each row takes about 10 to 15 seconds to "check" as opposed to other rides where a simple walk by checking will do.

I like Mantis up until the MCBR which, for me anyway, indicates the beating is about to begin.

I'd be hard pressed to find another coaster in which the fun and excitement drop off so dramatically after the MCBR.

The path you tread is narrow, and the drop is sheer and very high.

How about The Incredible Hulk at Universal?

I think they are both pretty similar as far as drop off after the MCBR.

What was with the rollback it apparently experienced opening day? Anyone got any photos/footage of that? It seems like an incident that would require a lot more down-time, etc.

Actually they pulled it backwards to the MCBR. I assume that after letting it go from there, it made it back to the station. It was probably just a combination of cool weather and maybe strong winds. It happens. Other coasters have valleyed as well.

I rode Mantis just the other day and I must say it was MUCH smoother than I can remember. I only rode in the font, which has always been the more comfortable row as far as head banging goes. I'll test out the back row later in the week and compare my experiences. Mantis has always been one of my favorite rides at CP, defiantly the most underrated!

I always ride Banshee...err..Mantis in the front row to avoid the head banging. If you know how to ride it it can be pretty fun, especially at night.

The best stand up? I personally dont think so. I think Riddlers Revenge is WAY better..no head banging at all and tons of smooth elements!
LOVE that coaster! :)

It's all about getting around the barrels, or over the fences, right leads, no faults, fastest time and looking pretty when done. What's so hard about that?
