Mayflies. Ugh.

I heard some eco-smartperson talking on a media outlet claiming that the bumper crop of them is an indicator of a healthy lake biome.

Or as granddad would say "inadequate spraying"...

Eco smart person is right! Mayfly nymphs live under lake mud for a year or two before emerging as mayflies, and like other living creatures they can't survive in a polluted environment. They need fresh, clean water to thrive.

The past few years I've gone in early May instead of June. Wasn't because of the flies, but it's certainly a perk not having them around.

My issue isn't the flies, even swarms of them. It's October when you see the spiders that have feasted on the buffet of them over the summer. It's downright scary during HallowWeekends.

I thought that was the point.

Mayflies were out Wednesday night pretty bad, not horrible.

It's been my experience for four years before this last (when I moved family weeklong stay to July because of mayflies) that the week of June 20 was extremely bad for those four years.

I'm sure it moves around and is weather dependent.

Glad I am going to CFKI on the 30th...

Ever been there during cicada time? Now that can be gruesome... More so than the lake bugs.

Here and there in the park, but the tunnel beside the new Breakers construction was coated with them. I'm also seeing a couple dozen clinging to the Millennium Force control booth.

How are the bugs this time of the year? Has the high point in the season finished?

Done.

Not true.. they were alive and well last night.

Yes they're here, not bad at all though.

I've lived near the lake most of my life and have never seen the mayflies this late in the summer. A big surprise to see them this weekend. Hopefully this is the last of them.

Mayflies or not, it was very buggy Saturday night.

I was there on a gorgeous day two weeks ago and nary a one. Maybe they hatch in waves like the cicadas down here.

But they burn so good, watching them being sucked into the firebox of a locomotive as you toss a couple of scoops of coal in.
