Smoking

I'll apologize in advance to Jeff, and the moderators, I am just getting annoyed by this....

Dear Emma the Coaster Girl, I am really tired of your no-smoking posts.  WE GET YOUR POINT!  First of all, even though CP probably needs to improve enforcing their rules.  Let me point something out.  You are going to break a law sometime in your life, and never get caught.  A good example is speeding in a car. There is nothing you can effectively enforce.  In order to do that, you have to have 1 police officer per person....  Also, everyone is alergic to something.  I'm allergic to corn.  However, I can't ask the US government to outlaw corn.  that's obsurd and stupid.  Just like asking CP to ban smoking.  I don't smoke.  I agree with you it's stupid and filthy. I also can't be around it.  However, I put up with it.  I don't care anymore. It's a fact of life.  You're saying smoking is annoying.  I'm saying that the most annoying thing is you stating in almost every thread smoking is annoying.  Life is full of annoying things you don't want to deal with.  However, the best thing to do is just deal with it, because society won't change.   We live in the United States of America and means we are all entitled to our individual freedoms.  I can do whatever I want, you can do whatever you want. Most importantly, that is what makes America, America. FREEDOMS.  I'm proud to have freedoms. I'm proud to live in a country with freedoms.  I don't need people telling me or telling other people they cannot do something.

Thank You.

2 Points

1). Your rights are only good until they infringe upon the rights of others.  You chose to inhale a toxic substance that also invades the air that others breathe.  Plain and simple. You can make a fist and swing it in the air because that is your right...but if you make that fist and punch someone in the face you have gone beyond your rights.  America is not a completely free society, never was, never will be.  America grants as much freedom as possible, but it stops your freedom once you encroach upon the freedom of others.

2). It is impossible to be "Allergic" to smoke.  Allergies come from the bodies inability to fight natural allergens (pollen, weeds, etc.).  Some people have natural immunites to allergens that counteract the side effects. Smoke is an "Irritant" that causes many of the same reactions that allergens cause.  Nobody has a natural mechanism to deal with smoke.  Everyone is affected by it, granted some more than others.

There are very few "pro-smoking" arguments, and hardly any of them are very valid.  It amazes me how people will adopt beliefs that support what they like to do...whether the beliefs are true or not.

Flisk, I disagree (X gets the square).

You certainly do NOT need one police officer per person in order to effectively enforce anything.

For starters, most folks are self-policing.  Good, law-abiding, rule-following folks for whom a policy or ordinance is enough to direct their behavior.  To narrow it down to our particular case here, I would be willing to wager that the majority of smokers who patronize Cedar Point do not break the rules and smoke in line.

That leaves the ones that do.  It is not a matter of the CP police being unable to enforce the smoking ordinance, it is their unwillingness to do so.  It is quite simple to see a puff of smoke coming from a queue.  A little fourth-rate detective rate will tell you within 20 seconds (or the next exhale) from where that puff originated.

However, the problem here is that these glorifed mall security officers (I know CP has a "real" police force, but puh-lease!) consciously choose not to enforce the non-smoking-in-line ban.

Personally, I don't have a stake in this.  I don't smoke, never have, but the bar that I go to on Monday night's smells like the RJ Reynold's plant.  I reek when I get home.  I choose to frequent that establishment, knowing the rules.  If CP has established "non-smoking-friendly" rules, those who do not wish to be around smoke should be accommodated within those rules.

That having been said -- Emma, Flisk is right.  It's getting old.  Put the soapbox away.

It is impossible to stop everyone from smoking in lines.  Take the entire MF line for instance.  If it is full and moving, how many people do you think it would take to "police" for smokers?  Being a law enforcement officer I can tell you a law or rule such as the no smoking policy is the type of thing if you see someone doing it right in front of you, tell them to stop.  I am positive, no matter what you have heard, seen, or been told, that the cops at CP don't care too much about this rule.  It's just not that high on the enforce list and not to mention, it's not a law.  I can remember not to long ago smoking was allowed just about everywhere.  Now, everyone seems to have an allergy to it or says it makes them sick (which most of I think is bull).  But everyone seems to think they have a right to smoke and non-smokers seem to think they have the right to dictate where smokers can smoke, even in places like CP.  If Im around someone who's smoking, I just move away a little if it's bothering me that much.  But I can NEVER recall a time when I was overwhelmed by smoke at CP.  I don't see how you could be.  Your outside not in an enclosed area.  So stop crying ;)  There's bigger things to worry about.  Like the time I saw a burnt beer bottle cap and a small unfolded paper packet on the floor in one of the restrooms at the point.  You figure the rest out.

BHG:"If I don't believe in myself would that be blasphemy?"

The City I live in recently passed an ordinance that prohibited smoking not only IN public buildings, but within 100 feet of the entrance to a public building, playing field, court, etc.  This, to address the effects of second hand smoke on non-smokers.

Surprisingly, there has been little, if any complaints from the smokers.

Very valid points from all here. My turn! I am an ex-smoker so I am probably FAR worse than anyone who has never smoked. Did I ever smoke in the queue? No because it was not permitted. As a ride op when I busted someone smoking in the queue you can bet I would tell them to put it out. When on "crowd control" position I would watch the person and when they got to me I would nicely remind them there is no smoking on ANY queue lines. You can imagine how shocked they were I even said anything since they were long done by then. (Question to smokers-do you see ashtrays any where on the queue lines?? HINT!) I can also say as a ride op all the butts in the queue to sweep up nightly about made me want to puke :(
I find it VERY difficult on a daily basis dealing with smokers-I hang with cowboys and you can imagine how many of them smoke, even my own b/f for one. I HATE it-it drives me CRAZY....but....
it is THEIR choice to smoke just as it was mine. They are aware I am a ex-smoker so they do try to be considerate towards me :)
Unfortunitely the general public is NOT that considerate. I quit, I know for some its not that easy so I can truly understand and have compassion for them. As for banning smoking at CP-it will not happen, it is an OPEN space. I know smokers are no longer the majority, I know they are uncomfortable smoking in certain places, but it is a VERY addicting habit and I do try to have compassion for them. It doesnt mean however that they can smoke in MY house, or MY truck it just means I try to be compassionate.
I do HATE line smokers though-
dont you just LOVE the way they "hide" the cig behind their back and "shoo" away their smoke like NO one could possibly guess THEY'RE the ones smoking? DUH!!!
I would hate to see CP go the way of SF Great Adv-they have line "police" who sit in lifeguard chairs looking down on the queues!

Boy, is that true. I quit a couple years ago (after 27 years) and was I a SOB toward smokers for the first year!  But, while I have to agree it's a person's right to smoke, I do think it's my duty to help people understand what it can do to them. Believe me, when you're flat on your back with chest pain so bad you can barely breathe, it's very hard to justify all those cigarettes to yourself.  I'm not a jerk to people any more about it, just truthful.

And to you people who still choose to smoke - please - don't do it in line.

Now I'll step down...
