The Summer Sucktacular

Is this the same thing as last year (I don't even know if it's running yet) and will they close MF early to run it??!! (that might induce violent reactions!!)
If history is any indication, there will be very few changes made to the show. I think CP thinks that the Jump Jive and Jam show that they added last season was change enough for the time being.

The show starts tomorrow night (they're calling it a preview this weekend) then begins its daily run on May 26.

As far as shutting down the MF, there's no real reason to. The noise from the show will easily drown out any noise from the coaster (or the riders, I should say -- the coaster is quiet).

one thing that i cant understand is why when they show the hockey teams in the sports segment they dont mention the red wings?they mention detroit hockey but not the wings.for other states they mention the names of there hockey teams, whats up with this????
Because we get pelted with enough Red Wings propaganda all day while we're there. I don't know how many Wings shirts I see all day long. Ugh and icky. Go Penguins.

(having not seen the show in question...) So, if they promo hockey...will they add the Blue Jackets this year? :) --Dave Althoff, Jr.

As someone who could care less about college sports, I can't imagine how someone visiting from afar feels about Ohio vs. Michigan rivalries. Along those lines, I don't think I'd care much about being "Proud to Be An American" if I was Canadian. Lots o' Ontario plates in the lot, eh?

This localization of the show is the park's single greatest holdback to becoming a true national (and international) destination.

Yeah, by God, it should be America vs Canada!

Of course, I think an eagle would kick a maple leaf's butt...
As one who travels from "afar" I never even knew about the college sports rivalries until I saw this show. It is correct that it means virtually nothing to someone from outside the local area. I'm sure not many from Ohio give a squat about the football rivalry between the NY Jets and New York Giants or the Yankees-Mets thing.(I live here and I don't give a crap about it). This show should be overhauled to basically just let people watch a good laser show with the proper tunes FOR a laser show. Last year I met a lot of folks from all over the place, mostly NOT from the area. CP is becoming a tourist destination more so every year. This is what I believe the management is striving for. Hopefully someone "in charge" will realize that the Summer Sucktacular dosen't have to suck and leave out of towners(and Canadian friends)scratching their heads wondering what the deal is.
It is ironic that Cedar Point does print and television advertisements in Canada and then the Sucktacular has the “Proud to be an American” theme. It doesn’t really bother me that the show is pro-america. I just accept the fact that when I come to the States that I will find everything to be red, white and blue.

It would be interesting to find out the statistics for Canadian visits. Both Cedar Point and the Ohio Tourism board (or whatever it is) advertise in Ontario.

Watch out for extra Ontarians this Monday as we celebrate Victoria Day with the May 2-4.

I don't know - the crowd gets pretty loud duing those rivalry segments.

Jeff - do you think the laser show is keeping Cedar Point a regional park?

It's a small part of the equation, but when I see something like that, all I can think of is how silly it must seem when I bring my friend in from California.

The show is quite a bit different this season. As for the sports rivalry... there are fans of U of M and Ohio State all over the country... same for Notre Dame, etc. I am "Proud to be an American" and would be very dissapointed if that was taken out of the show. Our international employees think it is one of the best things about the show and always comment on our patriotism. As for friends from other states.. my friends from California thought it was pretty neat when all the sports fans cheered for their own teams.
I agree with Jenn on the playing of "Proud to be an American". For some reason - maybe I'm wierd - it gives me chills to hear that song after having a great day at the park. I know there are parks in other countries and stuff, but being at Cedar Point (the best park in the world) and hearing that song just reminds me of how great this country is and that we should appreciate it. Let's just say the Batman: Thrill Spectacular at Darien Lake yesterday did not do the same thing for me! :) (at least Superman: RoS gave me some good rides!)

What could be better than Y2K @ Cedar Point - America's Rockin' Roller Coast? *** This post was edited by MDOmnis on 5/21/2000. ***
Jeff, I'm from California and the only silly part IMNSHO is the Ohio State part. Why bother with those losers?

The more you ride it, the more you want it!

If you really want to make the Summer Sucktacular look silly, go down to Florida and see how Epcot ends the night. Now that's class.

While Illuminations (and Fantasmic, for that matter) are awesome spectaculars, there's no way on God's green earth that CP could put on something approaching those.

However, in sticking within the realm of possibilities, there is no doubt that they could improve the laser show 100% or more. Dorney Park has essentially the same show, with a Penn State/Philadelphia/New York/Pittsburgh theme (although with Pittsburgh not being in their marketing area, I don't know why...)

One show for two parks would not be a problem. However, they could and should make it less geographical. If they did so, they could easily put up shows in Valleyfair, Worlds of Fun, and Knott's as well with no hassle.

Perosonally I really like the Summer SPECTACULAR. I'm still in school and everyone I talk to there loves it also. Sometimes we do have to miss it to ride an awesome coaster but I always try to get to it. It gives me chills too because of the excitement and emotion you feel with the lights the fireworks the lasers and the "Proud to be an American" playing over the speakers. It makes you think of what all this country has and how proud everyone should be of this great nation. May the show live on!

PS it would be nice to see more variation for the return visitors to the park.
