Travel on Rte 2

I was on Route 2 last evening (heading EAST from Toledo to Sandusky at 9:30 pm and heading WEST from Sandusky to Toledo at 2:30 am) and noticed SEVERAL State Highway Patrol sitting, with lights off in gas stations, pull offs, etc at various points, mostly focused in the Ottawa County/Davis Besse area.

Heading back to Toledo @ 2:30am, an officer literally tailgated me from the drive thru convenient store east of Davis Besse "to" the Maumee Bay area (approximately 20 minutes or so). I was completely sober and driving 55mph on the nose...so for those of you with a lead foot or whom may "have a few" at night, be incredibly careful this week! I don't know how many days this will last, but tourist season is starting so be self aware.

It's gonna be real iffy for me this year.. I'm setting the cruise at 65 on the turnpike.

I got a ticket at 8 am last year on the turnpike doing 80.. I still have not paid it... I should mail that in. *** Edited 5/2/2006 6:46:25 PM UTC by Coastern3rd***

Or just don't travel on Rte. 2...

That road is extremely dangerous as I have had one near fatal accident where my car was totalled and another where we narrowly averted disaster...not to mention the family of 6 or however many that died last year (or two years ago?) on Rte 2. After my accident I was talking with some State Patrol who said that Rte 2 definitely keeps them busy throughout the year with accidents and such. I'll pay the extra dollar or so and spend an extra 15 minutes on the turnpike to stay safe when driving back and forth from CP.

Safe travels!

I'll second that. I much prefer the turnpike to Rte. 2.

Better gas mileage on the turnpike.

Hm, we didn't see any cops on SR2 when we were down there on Sunday. It's probably a hit or miss type of thing. But don't think your safe takeing the turnpike. They like to hide in the centre 'authorized person only' turnarounds. Especially the one before the US250 exit going to Cedar Point. Since theres a hill there you can't see them until its too late. Probably be careful all around. Cops aren't always stupid. They know what time of year it is, and they'll be looking. I know they look for underage people who are driving after curfew too.

Actually, you should be careful in general. Not just around cops...

I've been:
Hit by a drunk driver (twice)
Rear ended by some idjit who lost control doing 80 in a honda civic
Clipped in the front by someone who refused to use signals
Blown a tire at 71mph on I-75
Dropped a drive shaft in a mustang
Ran over a Muffler and blown 3 tires.
Hit a dead deer in the middle of I-75 causing over 2k worth of damage to my girls new car.

Stupid crap like that can happen to anyone... Just be careful in general.

Just wear your seatbelt and don't speed and you won't have a thing to worry about. On whatever road you travel.

Thats why I said "Probably be careful all around".

We typically camp out at East Harbor St. Park, and hit Rt 2 for short time. Out of 11 trips last year, there was always a patrolman at every turnaround just waiting.

so for those of you with a lead foot or whom may "have a few" at night

Um, dont be driving period. But good advice to anyone...its like a concert getting out every night of the summer.

I stopped taking the turnpike two years ago for a couple of reasons. Reason 1 is for the extra cost and time, but reason 2 is more important. After a long day at the park, the last thing I want to do is get on a road where every mile looks exactly like the one before it and the whole thing is a straight line. Rt. 2 definately forces me to stay alert on the way home.

Now I just need to get my cruise control fixed. Only ticket I ever got was heading home from Castaway Bay last winter. Long stretch of road with no traffic kinda causes your speed to go up up up if you aren't paying attention.

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

It seems last summer as well (since a friend lived directly off of Rte 2 near Maumee Bay) that the "most" concentrated area of state highway patrol was ALWAYS around East Harbor St Park and Davis Besse...and ALWAYS anytime between 12am-3:30am.

Also as far as leaving the park or Sandusky in general in the summertime, we notice a large concentration directly around Sandusky Mall. 35mph means JUST THAT too.

Wow coastern3rd! After a track record like that, I'd hire someone to drive me around. :)

Talk about unlucky

That concentration of officers around Sandusky Mall is like that year round. That is because of Perkins Police. They have the money to keep each shift fully staffed with patrol officers all the time. They are strict when it comes to traffic laws on 250. But that is fine with me because the majority of visitors to Sandusky in the summer don’t know how to drive. The amount of accidents in between the Rt 2 overpass and the Cedar Point ramp is ridiculous.

I would always try to stay away from route 2. Take the turn pike, much safer.

Having spent last year paying $3500 (and change) for insurance, I'll probably be walking, just to play it safe. ;)

I'll stick to the turnpike, as usual. Its well worth the few dollars.

Holy Crap! $3,500? What do you drive? A pinto? Fiero? Honda Ridgeline? Various other cars that randomly catch fire?

I drive a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 QC 4x4. And, no, it doesn't have a HEMI.

I got one too many tickets that put me at 9 points, which is considered a "high risk" driver. The kicker is that the final ticket was for driving my four-wheeler with an expired license. The law states that if you are 16, you can legally drive an ATV without a license. However, if you ever get a license, you can never let it expire if you want to continue driving your ATV. Totally bass ackwards law... Even more messed up is that I wasn't doing anything wrong on my ATV to justify being stopped. I was driving down a snowmobile/ATV path (this is wayyyy up in the UP - Houghton County), and was passing by some kids from the local high school who were out jogging. I believe they were on the track team. Anyhow, I slowed to an absolute crawl and was idling along in 1st gear and saw a sherrif up ahead, who motioned for me to stop, and then gave me a ticket for the expired license. I no longer have any respect for law enforcement.

I should send him a bill.

Yikes, the fee's the State charges on 9 points alone has to be insane.

djDaemon's avatar

Driver Responsibility Fee = $150/year for 2 years.

So, that one ticket cost me a grand total of over $1500.
