#10 -- Northeast Blackout of 2003

Cedar Point Top 10 Stories of the Decade

On August 14, 2003, strain on high-voltage power lines caused a cascading effect that forced the shutdown of more than 100 power plants in the Northeastern United States. The blackout affected 55 million people in the United State and Canada, including 30,000 people enjoying the warm day at Cedar Point.

The power outage started at 4:15 p.m. and eventually caused the park to close at 7:30 p.m. The outage left some guests stuck on rides, with the longest stranded for about an hour.

Power was restored in the early evening. The park collected names and addresses and guests were later offered free evening admissions.
