Cedar Point 5K - Student Athlete Warning

Cedar Point is hosting the Chris Smith 5K race this weekend. The prizes for the top finishers include park tickets and fastlane passes. If you are a high school student athlete from Michigan (I suspect it is the same in Ohio and other area states) accepting these prizes would be risking your eligibility to compete on your high school track and cross country teams. The MHSAA limits the total value a student athlete can receive based on athletic performance (door prizes from random drawings are OK because they are not based on performance). If the MHSAA finds out you've accepted one of these prizes you will lose your eligibility.

College students - ask your coach. It would really suck to lose your scholorship because of a couple park tickets.

Seems ridiculous, but sadly, you are probably right on at least some of this. God forbid someone be free to use their talents to earn a buck.

Ya, stay away student athletes. I'm not fast enough to keep up with you young punks anyways. I want all the prizes for myself. All these student athletes with their tight skin, athletic figures, and boundless energy. What chance do the rest of us have?

OHSAA regulations set the limit for awards at $200 so I would think Ohio student-athletes are okay, but, I would certainly encourage anyone who is planning to run to first check with their school.

Of course the easiest way to be safe is simply to not win. Not winning = no prizes. :)

Or you could win, and then not accept the prize as well. Nothing wrong with that. LOL
