Cedar Point Shores - Slides Dismantled

The slide complex closest to Breakers is being dismantled. The pieces are stacked up in the parking lot near the Resorts Gate.

Is this the taller/older complex that used to be a lovely shade of tan?

If so, that's surprising, (or maybe not due to its age); we hit up Shores quite a few times last summer and there wasn't an "unpopular" complex or set of slides. With how busy that place gets the one thing they don't need are fewer options; especially a complex that features multiple options. I might be confusing which one you are talking about; but I am thinking it's the Wild Walleye (versus the Perch Plunge....which, if you're wondering, still doesn't include delicious Lake Erie perch).

Always fun to see surprise removals/closings.

Promoter of fog.

It's the shorter complex with the wide slide off the front.

This leaves the taller center complex (the one with the "hut" on top) as the last piece of 1988 Soak City, I think. Tadpole Town and Main Stream opened in 1990, if I remember right.

Could it be some slide replacement going on? Or is the whole complex coming down.

Hard to tell so far. The stairs and supports are still standing for now.

I can't even remember the last year those slides were open. Hopefully some new ones will replace them

They were open last year, like all the other slides. The lifeguard shortage (let's hope that's not a thing again in Ohio) delayed a lot of the slide openings and certainly led to sporadic operations, but my body traversed those slides multiple times with my girls last summer.

Seems like an odd time to remove it. Unless a new structure goes up soon, I wonder if this complex did not pass inspection from the state which is why it's being removed just before opening day. I still can't believe they have lasted this long.

Just some stuff I looked up for reference. "Crosscurrent" is still listed on the site:

Shores opens on May 25, just over 2 weeks away.

This reminds me of the time I saw a 60 year old guy slide down that slide, and he was going
so fast his bathing suit fell off, and I just stood there staring…it was beautiful…holy Geez!

Maybe it’s being RMC’ed with Raptor slide pieces

Maybe it’s just to make way for something new. The timing could easily be due to the fact they had some other small little 420ft project going on inside the park this year and didn’t want to manage too many things at once.

First ride; Magnum 1994

I haven't cared much about CP Shores since they removed the Speed Slides. If I could only bring back one defunct attraction on the whole peninsula, it would be those.

Sad to see these slides go, I like this older style of wide, open flumes so much better than the enclosed narrow tubes popular today.

And, when they slashed those beautiful trees along the shore, painted the old slides those tacky colors, and removed the hot tub, there was nothing left in that waterpark that appeals to me enough to spend any time in it.

Maybe they'll replace this slide tower with something really good.

The timing is indeed bizarre.

Looks like a Breakers expansion to me. It’s right next to the tower. Did anybody see on YouTube, Tony Clark confirmed they have signed a contract for something, no further details….

Contract for a ride or a hotel?

It is a little further away than next to. Plus the lazy river is between them so I am not so sure that would make for a good expansion from the hotel. Not to mention the long walk from the lobby to that wing!

It's been a couple seasons since I was living close enough to justify a season pass, but that year (2022) that slide complex (and the lazy river underneath) were for all intents and purposes closed literally every time I went to CP Shores. I think maybe once they had the wide slide open but that was it. Now, how much of that was lifeguard shortage and how much of that was the slides themselves, it's tough to say, but it does certainly feel like it's been the lowest priority part of the waterpark for at least a few years now.

The removal after opening day is indeed a bit head-scratching, but it's not as if there haven't been late to mid-season openings for things on the Challenge Park/waterpark side of things before. I'm curious how long funnel slides take to set up, that's been the one waterpark staple that's been glaringly absent from CP Shores for forever now.

I don’t get the concern over the schedule. Shores doesn’t even open until the 25th so no one should be bothered or inconvenienced by construction inside the gate. And as pointed out there was a push to get the new ride inside CP ready for opening day.
If there’s anything to think about it should be the lack of announcement, which makes me think there isn’t anything new on the way to replace this original slide tower. A new attraction would have definitely garnered a mention in the pre-season promotions.

With nothing to do on Friday night but drink and wander on a wonderfully deserted Cedar Point Beach, Boardwalk and parking lot I stumbled across these neatly stacked slide pieces. What I found very interesting is that they were all taken apart with care and then stacked with care as well. Not only the slide pieces but also the supports, brackets and some mounting hardware. If it were me and I were tearing something down to throw it away this is certainly not the way to do it. Hand tools and careful lifts would be replaced with torches and smash as much in a dumpster as you can to save money whilst recycling whatever precious metal hardware you can find...

Huh, if it was disassembled with the intent of reassembling it at some point, that opens up a few more paths of baseless speculation:

  1. They're redeveloping that whole area with the second lazy river and kids area and intend to put the slide tower either elsewhere in CPS or back where it was once they've done whatever else they're planning on doing
  2. They're redeveloping that whole area and sending the slide tower to Castaway Bay
  3. They're shipping the slide tower to Michigan's Adventure (okay maybe that's more of a Coasterbuzz joke)
