Good Buy Day 2016

Also, a ride op stopped the Eagles after about 4 spins because of snapping. Apparently you can't snap them now even though I've been doing it all season, and there's no signage telling you it is prohibited.

Good chance that was me. That rule has been in effect since the ride opened, and there is always a warning issued before the ride is stopped, although it is not warned as "snapping" as people could be unintentionally doing it.

The Eagles at CP suck anyways. Carowinds' are my favorite, the newer ones just don't snap well.

Just because the FAA says that aerospace is fine to fly in doesn't mean the owners of said private property aren't.

Also being a professional, I'm guessing you have your Part 107? If so you should know that yes, you are within your rights to fly as long as it's not restricted/controlled airspace. However, this is worth noting:

"He further explained that if the plane lands or takes off from the property without operation, the operator can be sued for trespass."

Worth it? I think not.

Corkscrew, Power Tower, Magnum, & Monster/ Witches Wheel Crew 2011

I was at the park all weekend and honestly thought things were running great. I got a shirt for $2 and that was on Saturday. My only complaint was the long lines to get food and drink, but I expected that for a weekend. I also got a leather bracelet for 99 cents. The sweet shop had 75% off bulk candy and many other stores had sales. We didn't have any trouble with rides. Yes dragster was down most of Saturday due to wind, but later in the evening we saw it running and made our way over there and got a ride in. It didn't run Sun due to weather again. We had to wait a bit for gatekeeper and Valravn due to weather but that was a minor inconvenience. I don't know who it was that told me a bout the handicap passes but I used this Sunday and wow I wish I would have done this all along. We didn't have to wait for any rides or the haunted houses. I was quite surprised that they took people's word on if they had physical limitations. I saw a couple really young teens using those passes and I pretty much doubt anything was wrong with them. All the ride operators were really kind and helpful to me, I was a bit embarrassed having to use it. There was one especially great guy at Rougarou, Jacob, he offered his opinion on what row and everything. One thing I noticed and I'm not sure if it was just me but raptor seemed rough and my head got banged around a lot. I went in with very low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

I was right there with you on Valravn, then we headed to Gatekeeper and got a set but fun ride.

Note to self: buy a drone and have it hover outside the windows of MaverickLaunch's house; given what he's said here, I'm within FAA regulations to be free to observe what he does on a daily basis.

Another note to self: flying a drone hundreds of feet from a dormant coaster (legally) while the park is closed with a commercial license is EXACTLY same as flying it outside my house while my 9 year old daughter showers (which is illegal). That's super cool of you to even suggest. You just lost the special olympics of internet debate. So badly so, that I have re-entered a conversation that did not even merit my participation.

Congratulations on putting the safety of retired roller coasters over the safety and respect of young women . You, sir, have lost the entire internet, and any respect I may have had. Read some case law on both sides (there is tons, even passed by liberal courts)... the ... learn something, and troll elsewhere.

It is really sad that this is the type of nonsense that seems to typify the coaster enthusiast in general. We are not all bad guys, but, we are often guilty by association , and that's too bad.

What's even more sad is that if any of you have met me (and several of you have, I just don't share my internet handle as many of you did)... I'm a likeable guy. You guys are all likeable for the most part, in person. The fact that I don't propose flying drones pointed to children's showers shouldn't take me out of the cool kids Pointbuzz forum, which is the ultimate cool kids forum!.... (see what I did there? Classic coaster enthusiast attacks!)

It's really unfortunate. Every coaster-related thing I go to at CP is a complete embarrassment to me and my family, to the point my wife won't even go anymore nor maintain a CC membership(i.e., coastermania, HW preview two years ago, etc). It's a motley crew, to be sure. But if you think I'm going to sit here and take abuse from folks that have almost NONE of the facts, think again.

The levels of self righteousness here (i.e. Drones are wrong, but posting on pointbuzz all day while being paid by my employer to do something else is SUPER-COOL but entirely unrelated) makes me sick. Of course, those arguments are always ignored as they will be this time. Why? Because those making the arguments don't need the
Backup. That's ok. I don't need a seat on the short bus, fortunately, and good thing for me cause it looks to be full already.

Devarious brings up an excellent point - you are permitted, according to the FAA, to fly your drone over private property, but you are not within your rights to take off and land from private property without consent from the property's owner.

But really, that's beside the point. It stands to reason that the FAA will eventually regulate drones in a way that prevents both what you did and what noggin proposed in jest. And you know why the FAA will have to step in in such a way? Because people like yourself cannot be counted on to exhibit the most basic of common sense, and instead rely on finding what they think are legal loopholes to justify their bending or outright breaking of the rules.

But, again, the cherry on top is that you were incensed about your experience this past weekend, because the park didn't live up to some arbitrary expectation or assumed contract that you felt you had created with them. Meanwhile, you flatly ignored their explicitly-stated rules.

Congratulations on putting the safety of retired roller coasters over the safety and respect of young women...

You seriously should look up "straw man".

We are not all bad guys, but, we are often guilty by association , and that's too bad.

Yes, it is true that we as enthusiasts are often guilty by association with the worst among us. For example, we are often defined by those of us who think they are above the rules, or that they are entitled to behave however they want, because it is technically legal or whatever. In other words, you're part of the problem in this case.

...folks that have almost NONE of the facts, think again.

What more facts are needed? You wanted to fly your drone over private property, and rather than doing the appropriate, considerate thing - contacting the owner of said property to make sure it's cool - you relied instead on how you interpret FAA regulations. Again, this sort of inconsiderate behavior is what will ultimately lead to the FAA coming down hard on drones.

There was no warning issued, though, and he did use the word snapping. I didn't know it was a rule on the ride though. There isn't any signage or anything saying such.

I was making a mocking point, and I apologize if that wasn't clear. Why involve your child in the matter?

... that I have re-entered a conversation that did not even merit my participation.

An Internet chat board conversation doesn't merit your participation, and yet here you are.

Congratulations on putting the safety of retired roller coasters over the safety and respect of young women .

You're the only person who has brought young women into the matter.

The levels of self righteousness here...

And yet, here you are.

(i.e. Drones are wrong...

No one has said drones are wrong. It's been suggested that ignoring private property owners policies whilst hiding behind regulations, as you are doing, is not cool.

...but posting on pointbuzz all day while being paid by my employer to do something else is SUPER-COOL but entirely unrelated) makes me sick.

That's not what I do; I post on my own time. And why would you care so much about what anonymous Internet posters say that it would make you sick?

I'm a Marxist, of the Groucho sort.

I'm going with drunk-typing at 1A, but... maybe not....

Just curious of the take off and landing location of the drone. Unless it was from a boat, it would have a long distance to fly before getting to the park. Taking off from the beach, Lighthouse Point, Causeway, etc. is just as illegal as taking off from the park as it is all Cedar Point property.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

How exactly was snapping said then, if there was no warning?

I find it interesting that certain people keep using phrases like "legal loophole" and "interpretation of FAA guidelines...". This couldn't be further from the truth. Drone flight, when done under FAA rules and especially by a commercial operator, are entirely legal and no interpretation is required, nor is consent from the land owner. Does that mean I fly my drone around at 100 feet spying on people or creating a public nuisance (noise)? Of course not.

I will tell you that my drone flight did not originate from CP property, and only flew over it for about a minute. No rules broken there. Had I taken off from CP property, it would not have been "illegal", it just would have been a violation of park rules. They could have removed me. That's it.

Lastly, the hypocrisy some of you are exhibiting is like I've not seen before. The righteousness of "park rules police" are the first ones speeding down the causeway, running through the park, smoking outside designated areas, and here's the big one, putting your hands up on rides! That's a violation of park rules, folks! Hypocrites...

I called it a loophole because you know damn well that had you asked CP, they would have told you that you were not permitted to do what you did. Instead of utilizing common sense and basic human decency, you're falling back on "LOL who cares what CP thinks I didn't break any FAA regulations!!!" Is what you did illegal? Apparently not. But it was most certainly a douchebag thing to do. Just as it would be if you were to fly your drone over your neighbor's property to look over their privacy fence. Not illegal, but doing something like that against your neighbor's wishes would say an awful lot about you as a person.

I will tell you that my drone flight did not originate from CP property, and only flew over it for about a minute. No rules broken there.

Well, aside from the private property owners' rules. CP doesn't state that you can fly your drone over their property as long as it's "for about a minute". Their rules are clear - no drone flying without their express consent, period.

Brandon

It's not a legal loophole, because CP doesn't make laws. They make rules. Just like the ones I mentioned that you undoubtedly have broken at some point, but of course you ignored that in your response per your usual debate tactics.

There are houses (i.e. private property) adjacent to the parking lot as well.

Do 737's or Goodyear blimps need CP's permission to fly over the park? That is why the FAA regulates these things: otherwise property owners would object to planes flying over their property while flying from Hopkins to O'Hare. Property owners do hot have unlimited air rights over their property.

Yes, comparing Commercial Licensed heavily regulated aircraft to operating drones bought off of Amazon is exactly the same thing.

And the reason why CP and other private property owners have to apply for permits when building over a certain height is to not interfere with set flight paths. Which drones also do not file or have to comply with.

I ignored it because it's a ridiculous comparison. But if you insist...

You're 100% correct. I willfully and gleefully ignore their "no hands up" policy, every time I ride.

But here's the thing - if CP Police witnessed me doing that and you flying your drone there without permission, only one of us would be getting escorted out of the park.
