Magnum's station???

Lets bring this topic back again.

I like MF's techno music but I don't think something like it (or any techno) would fit well with Magnum.

Planning and Design visted Magnum's platform more than once this season. Magnum will have a new platform next year that will facilitate a safer, more efficient enviroment for the employees. Columns will be removed, allowing future ride ops to actually see the train and clears.

On another note, due to staffing issues, the "crowd" position, aka the op at the turnstyle, was often cut. It's less important than, say, controls.

Disclaimer: I was just a ride op; I don't know anything.

...In other words, they're trying to engineer a solution to the problems they manufactured on that ride over the past three years. When they finish, they will have an operation that is as safe and efficient as it was three years ago before they started screwing around with it. Isn't that always the way?

Hey - maybe they will get a new control booth too. One where the roof doesn't leak! :)

I have a bad feeling that this "redesign" will be something like removing the roof of the station so that the pillars just aren't really necessary anymore. I really hope P&D and someone with half a brain from operations get together on this one and do it right. Maybe Rideman and I could consult! :)

Just you and Rideman, Matt? Why not anyone with half a brain who's ridden the thing more than twice? I really think they could do better than Mr. Safety Science.

Let me volunteer, I can do a good job at desiging one!

.... So this means that for all of you who love to cut everyone by going to seat 1-3, you many actually have to start to wait for it next year. ....

Hi,

As i have only been to the point first time last summer and going to be there again this summer..

Can someone please explain to me how do you do the "short cut" to the 1-3 seat?

is that first car 3rd row? is there a seperate line for that spot??

Thank's

gil

There is a separate line for every row of the train.

When they installed the platform gates, they screwed up. Instead of angling the queues for the first car of the train to match the front wall of the station (as the station was configured for the first dozen years or more), the new railings are all set at a right-angle to the track. The front wall of the station, then, angles back sharply from the downtrack end of the station towards the first support column. Because of the railings, the queue for the front seat goes straight back from the track to the wall, then builds along the front wall of the station. The queues for the second and third seats are adjacent, but there is only space for one or two people to stand between the end of the railing and the station wall. So all the people waiting in line for the front seat end up physically blocking access to the queues for the second and third seats, meaning very short waits for those two seats. Past the third seat, the end of the queue is open to the center of the station, so rows 4-18 (or if you prefer, rows 2/1 through 6/3) are not affected by the angled midway-side wall. In fact, uptrack of the lead car, the Magnum station is downright cavernous.

I hope Annoymus is right up above with the new plattform. Because a lot of times I've waited for the front seat, I've had to wait a half hour because you don't know exactly where your standing for a while. You are like a herd of sheep. Trying to find your exact spot in line is a pain. And Rideman can you explain the word cavernous? I'm not sure exactly what that word means. *** Edited 8/29/2005 3:19:14 PM UTC by Shawn Meyer***

Hi rideman,

well,i did try to understand your deatlied description of the station, although, because i only have been to the patk once i still can't understand it too much.

i guess youll need to post a drawing or a map ! :)

and if there are " people waiting in line for the front seat end up physically blocking access to the queues for the second and third seats, meaning very short waits for those two seats." - how do you pass them to go to the 1-3 seat?

i guess i'll found out when i get there ;)

thank you!

Like a cavern (a cave-like thing).

When I first read this thread I didn't really remember the station being that bad... but it is. After observing operations in the Magnum station today and yesterday it is horrible. The main part that I thought was bad was the ride ops behing the huge columns, who designed that?

Supposedly Matt Ozoskey, the rides manager. He's got a safety science degree, allegedly.

Hmmm...I just can't imagine how it makes any sense at all to study any kind of safety without regard for other parts of the system. And yet that is apparently exactly what has been happening at Cedar Point.

Has nobody there ever heard of "dynamic systems engineering"?

--Dave Althoff, Jr
(Who suspects that the answer is, "Probably not." There aren't a lot of systems engineers out there, and most people seem to believe it has something to do with computer software (it doesn't, necessarily)).

Actually, yes, I do...

DSE deals with complex real-world systems and how to solve (and prevent) problems, by focusing more on the methods used rather than more traditional quantitative means.

7.5 years at Michigan Tech? Priceless...

Surprisingly enough, yes I have heard of DSE (thank you Michael Crichton). In real life a degree simply means you have knowledge about something, but experience is what counts in the real world. Safety Science Degree...experienced person...Safety Science Degree...experienced person. I would choose the experienced person over some recent college grad who has a degree but little else. I'm not specifically talking about the Ops manager, just stating my opinion.

Three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40, and a hammer. Duct tape if it moves and it shouldn't, WD-40 if it doesn't move and should, and the hammer as the last resort.

Of course, that experience thing is why I am clearly not qualified to comment on Magnum's station... :)

How do you get into that experience right away? Do they have a lot of schooling they have to go through?

Now I get why everyone likes 1-3, it is great and I walked right on today. Gotta love the people who wait for the front and block off that row.
