Mantis pain

CP08's avatar

Maybe it's just me but Mantis seems to be one of Cedar Point's more notorious coasters for being a real headbanger. And it just doesn't hurt in the head ;)

I have nothing against B&M or Mantis and I really like the design of Mantis with all its weird inversions, but IT'S PAINFULL in the head (esp. the ears) and puts a lot of pressure on the legs.

Does anyone second this or have somethin' to say about Mantis?

The first drop is cool until you hit that trim.

The rest of the ride is a wee rough yes. My girlfriend and I skip that coaster quite often and go right to Raptor. God does Mantis bang you around. You can't lean with the turns really or anything to improve the ride.

I wouldn't say that it's painful, but it can get rough in spots. The corkscrew is probably one of the Mantis's roughest maneuvers.

Mantis is painful to males more than females and taller people more than shorter people. To solve all of Mantis' problems would be to get Floorless trains. Faster loading time, and not as much pain, and more fun.

I'm tall and I'm a guy and I have no problems with it. Puts a good strain on my legs, but its not painful. I do agree that the first hill trims kinda ruin it by slowing things down a little too much.

^You must be an exception then. ;)

And when I said they should change it to floorless, I mean if the tract can handle it and its possible.

Making it a floorless coaster would be awesome....

I'm about 6" and it really hurts my ears.

I don't think that's tall or short

I'm also younger than most here though.

I'm still thinking about that floorless idea...:)

I thought the same thing about Mantis being painful until this year. I had always kept my head back, which hurt like hell. Now I ride with my head foward and my chest against the restraint, and I have so much more control over my body, and it's actually a pretty fun ride. I highly recommend trying this. :)

^^ I do that too. It helps some, but not for the whole ride.

One thing I will say in favor of the trims, is that with them on, there is actually a little airtime in the first two inversions. I think having the airtime in the two inversions adds to the ride. I haven't ridden it with the trims off to know if it provides the same experience.

^ I'm positive there isn't any airtime on any of its inversions. The loop has some hang time though.

This is one ride I skip on my visits. The pain to the neck and ears is beyond any enjoyment I get from it. They ought to sell blocks of soft foam for you to put on either side of your head for that ride - would be a real money maker!

^same, I ALWAYS attempt to avoid it because of the pain. Yet it there seems to be a magnetic force bringing me into the ride :) (that being all the weird inversions) but the ride is still fun in a sense, but painfull

I'm a tall person (6'6") and I have no problems on it. I actually think it's one of the better rides in the park. It's a little rough on the calf muscles sometimes, but I still like it.

I really like Mantis. I rode it for the first time since they installed the seat belts this year. I found it just as enjoyable as I remember. It is a little rough, but it is not uncomfortably rough. My legs do feel a little tired after riding it, but they are not in pain. As far as pain in other male places, I really don't notice that since I make sure that I am standing (and not sitting) during the ride.

I really think that the ride is great the way it is. It may not be for everyone and it is not perfectly smooth, but it is intense and fun. I think of it as a ride that you actively experience instead of sitting back and relaxing. Mantis is not the kind of roller coaster that I will re ride a lot, but I really do love it.

As far as leg pain, I got a trimless ride on Raptor right after riding Mantis. I found that #1, my legs felt good enough to run to Raptor after my ride on Mantis and #2 the trimless ride on Raptor felt just as rough and actually hurt my legs more than my ride on Mantis. I felt like my legs were being ripped off at the end of the ride. FYI - I enjoyed that ride on Raptor too.

If a coaster requires a certain method of riding in order to not get brutally pummeled, it's probably not worth it to begin with.

^EXACTLY^

Cedar Dan, I'm not sure if you post it referring to me, but I do not think that making sure that I am standing while riding a stand up roller coaster is doing anything unusual to make the ride enjoyable.
