This year's National Roller Coaster Day is August 16!

*Does anyone have any plans to celebrate or just ride coasters?*

Nope. At work.

Additionally, this is Elvis took a giant dump day. I will certainly partake with that in a bit..

At CP now, they are apparently celebrating this national day of make believe by having virtually every ride in the park down do to high winds.

And on a worse note, it's also Cleveland fan week here. So much orange.

Whoever organized this National Roller Coaster Day needs to come to reality. Its the 3rd Tuesday in August and people have to work, a lot of kids are now back in school. Clearly Cedar Point hasn't bought into this day so as the Roller Coaster Capital of the World, that says a lot about this National Day.

Seriously? The date is the same every year, and has been since the beginning, no matter what.

The date was chosen because it's the anniversary of LaMarcus A. Thompson's first-ever patent for a roller coaster, in 1885.
It has nothing to do with Cedar Point, they have nothing to say about it, and nobody is changing it. So take the day each year to ride a roller coaster, or if you can't (or won't), just take a minute from the day to think about Mr. Thompson's invention and all we have to be thankful for.

Btw, today is also National Tell a Joke Day, National Airborn Day, and National Rum Day. I wonder if comedians, airmen, and rum drinkers also have their panties in a bunch because the 16th happened to fall on a Tuesday this year?

I have never heard of National Roller Coaster Day. Doing some quick Googling, the facts just don't seem to quite add up for August 16th.

Richard Knudsen applied for the first "roller coaster" patent on November 12, 1877. Such a ride was never built.

LaMarcus Thompson applied for a patent on April 3, 1884. The Switchback Railway (which he designed) opened at Coney Island on June 16th, 1884, before the patent was officially granted on January 1st 1885. Thompson later applied for another patent on September 10, 1885.

So yeah, no August 16th. It seems to make more sense to have the date be June 16th, which is when the first "real" roller coaster opened, Switchback Railway.

But hey, Happy National Rum Day everyone.

Happy got up the earliest I have since the end of the school year to attend a boring meeting and what amounted to a pep rally for school employees who are supposed to go back to school tomorrow day and deal with the MIL day to me. Unfortunately no coasters in sight.

National Rum Day is something I can wrap my arms around.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

I did some some pre-National Roller Coaster Day celebrating this past Thursday at Kings Island. Oh, on Saturday I continued the pre-celebration by going to Dollywood for the first time. I did get on Lightening Rod, too! Does that count?

Yeah, the nerve of them to create a promotional day during a time that would otherwise be less crowded! It's almost like they're trying to make money or something!
