Good... people can finally stop crying about a lack of updates (since there really hasn't been anything to talk about). This'll be the last one I bet. The next time you'll hear people talk about it will be in our trip reports!

Wow, you can't see the bottom of the hill
I would have liked to hear alittle more. Like something about the speed it tested at. At one point I read somewhere it was a little faster then the 92 they had saad it would be. How far along is the theming and maybe if it had passed its final certification from the state. Some new pics would be nice as well. But anything is better then nothing.

I know from good, reputable sources that the first drop can be anywhere between 88 and 94. It just depends on wind, temperature, etc. The things that is really faster than they anticipated is the time of the ride. In other words, you'll get back to the station faster than they thought.

Do they get back to the station quicker because of the new lift system, or what? I thought they do thousands of simulations and determine this beforehand...what is causing the deviation you think? I mean given a speed and distance, you shouldn't have any surprises....

Like I said, there are a lot of variables. I'm fairly certain the S:ROS at Darien (same trains and track design) has some variation of ten seconds or so, and that's a shorter ride. Other changes include longer trains, different wheel materials, different air pressures (a stretch, but you'll be pushing air in those tunnels), etc. And yes, I do think the lift is faster than they expected, but don't quote me on that.

for the nitpick file:

A previous diary entry stated that he (Monty) rode the service car to the top of lift and he commented about how great the view was. In this most recent entry he says that he saw the incredible view for the FIRST time.

any thoughts?
Jeff are you sure that MF will vary in speed like that 88 to 94? How could you only go 88 dropping 310ft at an 80degree angle and not go atleast 90?

You would be surprised at the effect wind has on coasters. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't go over 90 on some days.

Well, the first run was clocked at 88, so there's no guess work there. Like I said, there are a hundred different variables, in particular the temperature of the track, the wheels and other moving parts. The only other currently operating Intamin hyper (S:ROS) is extremely temperamental, and MF is the same technology.

The speed and performance of ALL coasters have many variables like this. Just ask Danny H.--not one of his #? rides on Magnum have been the same. As for the speed, so hey, it only goes 88 sometimes. Cherish the times you THINK you're going 94. Regardless, though, you're still going fast.

also remeber the speed gun used to clock it has a deviation of +-4 mph

Does anybody else find it interesting that this new diary entry was posted on the same day that SOB apparently gave its first public rides? (at least I assume that it did with the rush of TR for SOB on Ultimate Roller Coaster) Whether or not he did that on purpose, I think that it was great timing.

As far as him saying that he saw the incredible view for the first time, I'm sure that he was just making the story dramatic and decided to say that it was his first time up there.

my cousin went to cp during the testing phase 3 and he said that the train was clocked at 85 mph but it was the first run of that day and the guy that was clocking the speed said that by the end of the day it gets around 94-95 mph

I was wondering what speed they would put in the record books? would it be 92 like they first said, or whatever the fastest they clock the thing at?
Probably the speed it achieves when Guiness is there that day.
What about sites that list things like the fastest 10 steel coasters and stuff, not just guiness.. but thanks for the info :)
