The Blog is Gone?

I didn't want to hijack the Goodbye Tony thread for this, but a thought popped in my head about it.

A lot of people follow the blog, many of them just park fans and not enthusiasts. Heck, many parks are adding or expanding their blogs as a means for reaching park guests (in addition to things like Twitter and Facebook).

So is anyone else surprised (or not) that the park is letting the blog die with Tony rather than having him ramp up a replacement to take over for him? It just seems like a very short-sighted approach to reaching your fans.

Given where the decision likely came from, I'm not surprised at all. I'm more disappointed in what will probably be the end of the videos, as they were quite well done, and were not only interesting, but entertaining as well.

I just don't get the decision. Seems incredibly boneheaded to me.

Yeah, I guess "surprised" wasn't the right word. "Baffled" I think works better.

Word.

The blog was awesome during the offseason. I loved checking it and hearing and seeing the park get ready for the season. Updates on StR, photos, videos, the '100 days to go' mark, and the last couple of updates reminding us there were only days to go.

I'll never forget reading this update. I don't know why, but it had me ready to leave work and head to the point right then. Nothing got me more pumped about the point than the blog.

Seriously... what a bummer. Just goes to show that the 100s of us that are crazy about the point don't match up at all to the 100s of 1000s on FB.

:(

And with Tony leaving, I seriously question how much even the FB page will get updated from here on out.

I think the company has begun (somewhat) to embrace social media, made evident by the fact that their new ride was announced on Facebook. The updates may not be as good, or may occur a little less often, but I seriously doubt that the park is going to throw away a following of more than a half million people who are interested in happenings there. But it's really too soon to tell.

However, I think it's worth pointing out that the company has continued to lose a very talented individuals this season, Tony and Jack included... leading to greater implications than how often the blog will be updated or they'll have a new Facebook post.

I hear that kinzel is going to be running the blog and facebook updates now.;)

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I just hope that the new facebook style will include things other than "Great day for Soak City!" I'd like to see "Check out our new photos and interview for Wind Seeker (link)" and I'd still like to see a new PointCast linked via facebook once in awhile.

And I thought MaXair and Power Tower were just the beginning of all the new POVs we were going to be getting?

JuggaLotus's avatar

Considering Tony was the driving force behind PointCasts, I think those have died with the blog.

Maybe Tony will become one of us, as far as adding his comments to the different topics on Pointbuzz. He's not throwing his laptop away and moving to a cave!

They should hire me, I would love to do PointCast.

I guess our thoughts of Wisconsin differ.... ;)

It would be nice to see Tony around here, though I'm not sure how much "insider" info he'd be able to offer us. Sharing inside info after leaving an employer wouldn't exactly enhance his resume.

:)

I'm wondering if he's even allowed to participate on sites like this. He probably signed something pretty air tight about what he can (nothing) say if he were to ever leave when he joined CP or attained a level of being "in the know".

Management isn't going to want a "Gee golly, I didn't know I couldn't say that" moment, so maybe it forbids interaction at all.

djDaemon's avatar

Well, he was probably under the same NDA during his employment, and he was able to make limited comments on certain things. I don't see why he couldn't continue interacting along those guidelines.

Most NDA agreements and certainly non-compete clauses get a lot tighter when you leave a company. That's when they become most important.

Damn "sassy" people on Facebook. Tony just got tired of them. ;)

If the blog ever does start back up, I feel bad for whoever tries to fill Tony's shoes. Tony, you really were one of a kind, and made CP a little more magical. Even if we weren't at the park.

I really hope whoever takesover does as much as he did. Look at all the other park's blogs and Twitter. Don's posts from Kings Island are really pointless to read. Do I care that you just rode I305 today, Don? No, I don't. Atleast Tony always gave great information and made it fun. The other blogs usually just say we are having an event this day at this time. That doesn't intrest anybody.

I think you're being a little harsh. It's not like Don was tweeting what he was eating for lunch. He's doing things that few other jobs have the priviledge of doing.

It's astounding to think of the quality people who have left the company in the last year or so.

My author website: mgrantroberts.com.

I was just thinking the same thing. I'm know of at least two quality people from Live E that have left in the past year or two. I don't know what, if anything, that says about working for Cedar Fair.
