Wheel problems and other false rumors

Time for rumor control... I checked some facts.

-Millennium Force is not having wheel problems.
-Bolts did not pop out of the support structure the first time it ran.
-It has not been clocked at 110 mph.
-A full-timer did not lose a hand on the tunnels.
-Like Magnum, it's not sinking.
-They never "moved" a footer by digging it up and sliding it over.
-Yes, there were some supports that did not quite fit, but they were modified on-site and did not delay the process.
-The magnetic brakes did not spontaneously combust.
-No trims have been installed.
-None of the trains have separated mid-course.
-Did I mention it's not sinking?

Are you sure it's not sinking? It looks like in the webcam the supports are a little lower, especially the one next to the lost hand...
Of course it isn't sinking! It isn't going to start sinking for another 5 years or so. Duh!!

Ohh,ok. I thought it started sinking right after those bolts popped off.
I thought the reason for the man's hand flying off was that the tunnel sank, oh well.

No, I said that there were brackets in place in case they ever decided to add them in the future. There are no plans of doing so at this point.

Ok, heres how it is. The first time it ran, a bolt poped and landed where the tunnels are, it rusted to nothing, and somehow made the ground un stable, so the tunnel sank and therefor cutting off a full-timers hand, which flew into some trim brakes midcourse and caused the train to separate, this displaced the coaster, so it started to sink, in order to fix this, they dug up a footer and just slid it over. Now they clock it at 110 mph, this caused wheel problems which made the magnetic brakes combust, since a suport or two didnt fit properly and they had to be shiped off to Zimbabwe to be fixed. Its simple realy...lol....im not crazy....not at all....lol nothing but the...umm....slightly tweeked lies..I meen truth...lol

I personally love the one about it going 110. Especially considering that a train physically can NOT reach 110MPH from a 310 foot drop. It wouldn't reach that speed if it were just dropped from the top of the hill, in a vacuum. It's impossible with the earth's gravitational pull. The theoretical max for MF is around 97MPH. I did the calculations a little bit ago, so I can't remember exactly, but I know it's under 100MPH.

The bolt combusted because it was made of pure cesium, and since cesium EXPLODES when exposed to H2O, it blew a hole in the ground and footer!:)
Jman, I must be wrong, because when I did the *quick* calculations, I got about 130 MPH. Hmmm. Maybee I'll re-run my numbers.

The "quick and dirty" equation I generally use, which assumes no resistive forces and an initial speed of 0 ft/sec is...

Vmax [mph] = 60/11 * sqr (H [feet])

Using a value of 310 for H, I get a Vmax of 96.037 mph.

The equation is derived from the following information--

a = 32 ft/sec/sec.
v = 32t + v0 ft/sec; but v0=0
d = 16t^2 + v0t + d0 ft.; but d0=0 and since v0=0, v0t is also zero.

1 mph = 5280 ft/3600 sec

If you solve those simultaneous equations for v and perform the ft/sec--mph conversion you end up with Vmax = 60/11 * sqr (d)

One problem with your calculations. Mf doesn't have a vertical drop.
True, Millennium Force does not have a vertical drop. It's close, but it isn't vertical.

It turns out, though, that changing the angle of the drop in an ideal situation does not change the top speed. The downward force on the train is the same, and in the absence of resistive forces, it will take the coaster longer to travel down an incline than down a vertical drop, and it will accelerate less rapidly along the path. But the combination of smaller acceleration and increased time exactly cancel each other out, so the top speed is exactly the same regardless of the drop angle. Cool, huh? :)
