PERKINS TWP. - Developers of Coyote Falls have changed the theme and name of the proposed waterpark to Shipwreck Falls.
"Being near a large body of water, like Lake Erie, it made sense to go with a nautical adventure theme," said Pat Ricketts, Dial Family Resorts spokesman. The change will incorporate a theme of a shipwreck adventure, a similarly themed project is also slated by the developers in Rhode Island. The changes in plans haven't changed the company's timeline for breaking ground, which is uncertain at this point.
The Dial Family Resort Company project is in the process of having the internal road plans for the resort approved by Ohio Department of Transportation, Ricketts said.
The 347-room resort with 15,000 square feet of conference space, 65,000 square feet of indoor water attractions and another 10,000-square foot dry play area is still a ways off from breaking ground, Ricketts said.
The resort will target families with children ages 2 to 14 as its guests with attractions like a large theme restaurant, dinner theater and arcade.
The Dial Company is also trying to finalize financing the build. No date has been set to break ground.
Realtor Ed Hoty of Ed Hoty Realty is working on selling several lots at the front of the Shipwreck Falls property for retail stores or potentially box stores, he said.
The proposed resort will be at 6703 Milan Road on about 48 acres of property purchased by the Nebraska-based company.
Projected costs previously were estimated at $85 million. Dial had hoped to begin construction in the spring of 2006, according to previous Register stories.
The park could generate as many as 275 jobs.
Shipwreck Falls is the fourth proposed waterpark in Erie County. The Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express on Milan Road and the Quality Inn in Sandusky have also announced plans for indoor waterparks this past summer.
