Cedar Point Press Release
SANDUSKY, Ohio (Aug. 1, 2016) – In the wicked, tumbleweed-filled streets of FrontierTown, a “duel of thrills” never ends peacefully for an outlaw – and the outcome has been settled. Cedar Point announced today that Mean Streak, the park’s colossal wooden roller coaster, will be closing for good in the coming weeks.
Built by Curtis D. Summers, Inc., Mean Streak opened in 1991 as the world’s tallest (161 feet) and fastest (65 mph) wooden roller coaster. More than 26 million guests have boarded its three trains of green, gold and red with signature storm cloud and lightning bolt graphics, and experienced its 155-foot drop, tall hills and rattling turns over more than 1.7 million board feet of treated Southern yellow pine.
“Mean Streak has, and always will be a significant part of our roller coaster legacy at Cedar Point,” said Jason McClure, vice president and general manager for Cedar Point. “But we have our sights set on the future of FrontierTown, and unfortunately, that means Mean Streak has to leave our lineup of world-class attractions.”
Mean Streak will permanently close on Friday night, September 16. Guests and fans who want to pay their last respects can ride the coaster while the park is open daily through September 5. Then, the park reopens for special hours during a bonus weekend, Saturday & Sunday, September 10 & 11. Riders must be 48 inches tall to ride Mean Streak.
Finally, on September 16, the opening night of Cedar Point’s 20th HalloWeekends, the “last rites” will be given to the coaster with one final public riding session from 6 – 7 p.m. A special memorial ceremony and procession from FrontierTown to the park’s “Dead Rides Cemetery” will then take place at 7:30.
Cedar Point is making way for future development in FrontierTown and no additional information is available at this time. For complete information on Mean Streak, HalloWeekends and the festivities for Mean Streak’s last night, guests can visit cedarpoint.com/events.
