SANDUSKY - After 20 years at Cedar Point, Toft's ice cream has a new topping: A sign.

The ice cream parlor off the Main Midway has been designated as Toft's Ice Cream Parlour, while before it just was an ice cream parlor that served Toft's ice cream, said John Gauthier, spokesman for Toft Dairy. Toft Dairy is based in Sandusky on Venice Road.

"In my mind, it is about time," Gauthier said. "The partnership has more or less been there over 20 years. I think that this year it started to come up when we started to work with some of the guys from Cedar Fair planning and design. They were looking for an old-time ice cream parlor."

Toft's ice cream is served throughout the park in cones, milkshakes, malts and sundaes, among other treats. Prices range from $1.99 to $4.99. Cedar Point has no other ice cream provider.

"Absolutely, it is one of the most popular treats at Cedar Point," said Cedar Point spokesman Robin Innes. "The warmer it gets the more popular ice cream gets. It is great to cool you off."

Every year, Cedar Point serves 21,000 gallons of Toft's creamy soft serve and 34,000 gallons of its specialty flavors. The most popular flavor is Danish vanilla, which is used in the malts and milk shakes at Johnny Rockets.

"Eating ice cream and Cedar Point are somewhat weather dependent," Gauthier said. However, "you can rest assured if Cedar Point needs ice cream, it will get there."

In the late '90s, Cedar Point ran out of ice cream and the roads were so packed with tourists, that Toft Dairy took it to Cedar Point by boat, he said.

Gauthier said that Toft Dairy delivers ice cream to Cedar Point at least once per week if not more.

In July, Toft will host ice cream socials at the Hotel Breakers in honor of its new prominence at Cedar Point.

In addition to the new sign, more tables and chairs have been set up outside of Toft's Ice Cream Parlour. The ice cream parlor has been at Cedar Point since 1970, but has had different vendors.

"I think this ice cream is excellent," said 31-year-old Angela Haskins, who ate a scoop of Toft's chocolate on Friday. "It is smooth and creamy."
