SANDUSKY - Cedar Point has plans to expand its marina to accommodate growing business.

Monday, Sandusky City Commission will be asked to approve a submerged land lease, allowing the park to add 74 transient docks to the south harbor of the Cedar Point Marina.

The marina already has 665 slips. Of those, 100 are transient, which means they are rented for short periods of time, park spokesman Robin Innes said. The other slips are considered permanent and rented for the season.

With the addition of the new docks, 75 of the current transient docks, north of Famous Dave's, will become permanent because of demand, Innes said.

The marina can support the extra business, although does not divulge specific figures, he said.

The 74 transient slips being added are being taken from the Castaway Bay Marina, which will then have about 180 slips.

Innes said there is more of a demand for permanent slips at Cedar Point than Castaway Bay.

The project is slated to be finished by the 2006 season. Innes didn't have the project's cost.

Assistant City Manager Gary Packan, who is handling the submerged land lease, could not be reached for comment Friday.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources requires Cedar Point's parent company, Cedar Fair L.P., to secure a submerged land lease before the project can be constructed. As part of the lease process, the city has to pass a resolution approving the lease.

The city will receive 50 percent of the lease amount, which is undetermined at this point, according to city records.

With the addition of the docks, boat traffic will increase in Sandusky Bay, and businesses will benefit from the tourism created by the project, city records state.
