SANDUSKY - The Sandusky Main Street Trolley starts its third season at the end of May.
Ridership on the downtown trolley was down so significantly last summer, the green line will be an on-call service for guests staying in local hotels.
The red line will continue to take riders throughout downtown. To help ridership, the Sandusky Main Street Association is advertising in its brochure the downtown stops and what they offer, according to president Ruth Haag."We are hopeful it will be better this year," Haag said Monday.
The redline had 2,429 riders, compared to 3,326 in 2004 -- the trolley's inaugural year. The green line had 718 riders in 2005, compared to 1,655 in 2004.
Like last year, the green line will be $1 per person per boarding. SMSA will match the cost up to $700 to help pay for bringing people downtown, Haag said. The red line is free. Eligible seniors, disabled and kids under 12 are free on the green line.
The trolley's budget for 2006 is $29,500, according to Sandusky Public Transit Administrator Rosanne Bodner. SMSA is paying 15 percent of that, $4,425, and the Sandusky Transit System public dispatch ride system, which runs the trolley, is paying the rest, $25,075, she said.
The trolley runs 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 26 through Sept. 2. The green line is on-call during the same hours by calling STS at 419-627-0740.
