SANDUSKY - Sortinos plan to start construction in November on $1.5 million project at Cleveland Road complex.
The Sortino family has been given the go-ahead to build an indoor waterpark at Quality Inn & Suites, 1935 Cleveland Road."It's not something that is going to cause any trouble and if they feel they can better their attendance and make their business more viable," the board supports it, said John Mears, president of the Sandusky Planning Commission, which met Wednesday.
Construction on the $1.5 million indoor waterpark and hotel improvement project will start in November. The indoor waterpark, which will feature a 50-foot tower with two slides, will be built in the same location as the hotel's indoor pool and will open in May.
Mears, who works at Castaway Bay, said he sees people walking across the street from Cedar Point's Castaway Bay to the Greentree Complex, which includes the Quality Inn, a bowling alley, a betting parlor and the racing-themed restaurant, The Thirsty Pony. The two Cleveland Road businesses have a good partnership, he said.
"I am surprised with the amount of traffic on Cleveland Road that there isn't more businesses heading to Cleveland Road," Mears said.
When Castaway Bay guests ask questions about where to go, he often has to refer them to U.S. 250.
"There's no big-box stores and not a lot of restaurants on Cleveland Road," Mears said.
Also Wednesday, Sandusky Planning Commission approved plans for the construction of a 640-square-foot addition at American Quality Stripping, 1750 Fifth St. The building will be located on the southeast side of the commercial building within an enclosed area. The addition is for a burn-off oven used for stripping paint off metal parts.
