announcement date 8/18/15

To me it's pretty ridiculous to change the name of a coaster that hasn't even been built yet. If someone is concerned that Valravn is going to remind them about the incident on Raptor, then what the heck will they think of every time they hear the word "Raptor"? Better rename Raptor as well! Or, heck, just close the ride forever, after all, it did kill someone!

Actually.... Cedar Point's Banshee lost its name because a senior exec's wife was put off by the name's mythological origins; it had nothing to do with women being called a "banshee" -- and I was around 20 years ago -- calling women a "banshee" was not something that happened.

I don't doubt you, but is there a source for this information anywhere? If so, someone should update the Rougarou page on Wikipedia. I was also around 20 years ago (although not in Ohio), and to this day I have never heard someone use the word banshee as a derogatory term towards women.

Wikipedia - Rougarou

Not sure why the Wikipedia page needs to be updated; that was the mythological history of the name. Negative reaction from the public would be a polite fiction.

Well, the page isn't accurate if the real reason the ride was renamed was because a senior exec's wife was "put off by the name's mythological origins".

Well...

A) Wikipedia is hardly the place one goes for facts

B) The name was changed because the name was found objectionable at the time, regardless of the person or persons who found it so.

Also....

My post was immediately above yours. No reason to quote my post; anyone unable to remember what I said need simply scroll up briefly.

I'm not going to argue with you about Wikipedia or the origins of the Banshee name change, it's not really that important to me. I only brought it up originally to show that it has happened before at the same park.

My. Aren't you clever.

Is anyone on here actually advocating a name change? Seems like we are beating a dead horse...

^Sounds accurate to me, that's pretty much what we do around here.

That would be COMPLETE BS if the new coaster was renamed because of this incident. Taking political correctness to a whole new level.

Q:Did the new coaster have anything at all to do with the idiotic incident?

A:No

Q:Is new ride being built on top of 'hallowed ground'/site of idiotic incident?

A:No

Q:Is new ride named the same as/or sequel to ride of site of idiotic incident?

A:No

Q:Was the name changed of the ride where idiotic incident happened?

A:No

Q:Is the ride closed since idiotic incident?

A:No

Q:Why Does anyone think they are changing the name?

A:Because they delayed the announcement so it doesn't get distracted in the media by recent events.

CONCLUSION: They Must change the name of an unannounced coaster that the general public doesn't even know of yet. An unnamed ride that is not being built on the site of the incident. In order to avoid offense about an incident the park/ride had no closable investigative action on. All the while, the ride where incident happened keeps its name and remains open.

Pure Speculative Genius!! I would like to ask what stocks I should buy Monday and what the Powerball numbers are going to be as well.

When they announced Banshee at KI, they said it was their first female inspired coaster.

Speculate all you want but it's really entirely up to the park. If they feel it best to rename the ride, they should have enough time to do so and be ready by opening day (media day, technically). As for me, I'll just sit back and wait for the announcement..

Can we get on with the freak'in announcement that was going to announced an unannounced name that has been postponed on an unannounced name on a unannounced upcoming date. WTF!!! It's been over a week now, just announced it!! Already. Why are they catering to the 85% idiot people in the US? Especially the ones who look like the people from jersey shore reality D-Bag tv show??? "Where's my phone and my gel/brush bra?" That's way too important than my new career and my own life.

^^ Really impressive first-post material there. Welcome. Do you troll like that often?

Not really, Just frustration and letting out some steam on this whole 2016 new attraction. I haven't been giggled/excited since 2007 on a new ride from CP. So, just hearing all these rumors and actual confirmation on a Dive machine just makes it worse. Don't get me wrong, i'm still excited for it, but not intrigue on this cookie-cutter layout of a ride, that has no imagination or mind blowing innovation on this ride. Then again, it is B&M. Which i don't get why North America is just in love with them?? I prefer the wild, sexy, crazy girl like intamin, Mack, RMC, S&S to start building actual legit rides at CF parks. SF & others is the only Co. taking chances and knows what they're doing for the past 3-4 yrs.

Yep. Cedar Fair clearly has no idea what they're doing. Opening up the beach and front gate with GateKeeper, opening up Carowinds' front gate with Fury 325.. No clue what they're doing. :)

Meanwhile, I'll just be over here marathoning GateKeeper.

Cookie cutter rides? Leviathan, Gatekeeper, Banshee and Fury are nowhere close to being considered cookie cutter rides. Even Val-whateverit'sgoingtobecalled isn't a cookie cutter ride. Just because it has similar elements to other installations, doesn't mean it's somehow exactly like the others of its type.
