Cedar Point announces plans for new family rides, changes to Camp Snoopy, Hotel Breakers renovation

Yes TechieTechie, I totally agree with everything you're saying about preserving parts of hotel Breakers. I think I would literally cry if I went in and the main lobby and rotunda were altered.

I think the Rotunda and Lobby could use some new paint and carpet, but not an overall remodel.

However, some of the rooms are in desperate need of a makeover. This past July, for the first time in many years, we stayed in one of the older 3-room suites at the ends of the rotunda wings. We normally stay in the newer wing, but we brought more people this year and thought the extra, separated, rooms would be nice.

I was appalled by the conditions. Barely anything had been replaced since we last stayed in these rooms in the late 90's. For close to $300 a night, these are the amenities being offered:

Disgustingly dirty couch. We put a sheet over it.

The only chairs in the entire suite. Old, uncomfortable, beaten-up wooden chairs.

Dirty, waterlogged baseboards.

Broken shower hand rail with lots of mold underneath.

Moldy 1960's wallpaper.

Unflattering hallway decor.

I understand that you pay a premium to stay on-site and that these hotels are only open part of the year. However, there is a difference between basic amenities and worn out, dirty amenities. For close to $300 a night, they should do better than this.

It sounds like they are aware of the issues and are willing to correct them, so I am hopeful for the future.

Aside from the rotunda needing paint and things, I'm also fairly sure it needs new railings. I don't carry a tape measure around with me, but I do believe the white railings on the inside of the rotunda are a tad on the short side for today's standards.

Judging from this photo here:

You can see how low they really are.

I believe those railings have a maximum height requirement listed in the brochure. If you are over 52" you cannot go near them.

That couch is the most disgusting thing I've seen in any hotel. I can't understand how they can leave that in a guest room.

The renaming of Jr. Gemini better fits its new "association" with Camp Snoopy.

Good news: we didn't remove it! ;)

As long as it's not an indication of the future removal of Gemini. I would be devastated to see that go.

That's extremely interesting if that's true. I'll have to check it out.

Wow that room is in pretty bad shape! Memorial Day weekend I stayed in the tower section. My room was ok. I was in the corner suite. It was very open but the furniture wasn't in great shape. But that's how most rooms at breakers is right now.

I can't wait to see the new rooms in 2015. Someone mentioned on one of the forums to theme the rooms after rides. That would be pretty cool!

Also a few new shops would be nice too. The main gift shop is pretty small. Twice the size would be much better.

And lastly not sure if this should be on this forum but I'll say it anyway lol.
How about a brand new hotel over at the marina?
The dorms will be gone soon so they can use part of that land and tie it in with the marina. Of course most guest would probably rather be next to the beach. It could still have a nice pool area. But it would probably be better just to focus on breakers and sand castle. The idea just popped in my head lol.

What is the new restaurant going to be? In the articles and news stories, I can't find anything on a restaurant.

I cannot believe that room in that condition commands almost $300/night. I've stayed at nicer Motel Sixes.

The new restaurant looks to be an existing building that is being reduced and modified. I hope it's not going to be another burger place.

^^ Yeah, that's the one that's up in the air isn't it?
I posted that question to Tony on the CP blog, so hopefully I'm sure we'll see some answers on the CP or this site soon.

I called it years ago and I call it again; Maragritaville on the beach with Pat Dailey preforming weekly.

One thing I can't wait to see come out of this project is the Hotel Breakers roof. It might be small and insignificant, but the cupola on top of the rotunda looks amazing in the video.

Still holding out for a Hooters to someday come to Cedar Point...lol. Seriously though, I'm hoping another burrito restaurant goes in there. I really like the one that is over by Town Hall.

It will probably be a small counter service restaurant, a decent one of course, and I hope they serve something other than burgers and fries. We also need more regular icee stands around all the midways, I am tired of walking from one end of the park to the opposite end just to get a regular icee, (not the mix-it-up)

I also agree about Jr Gemini's name, it needs a new name, as the old one made people think it was a racer...."Gemini"= twins=two track coaster :)

Funny, most people I have encountered make no connection to the word Gemini and twins, until it's explained, and then there's the "oh yea....ok..." moment.

I like the name change just because it makes sense to put it as part of Camp Snoopy. I wondered from the beginning of Camp Snoopy why it wasn't just incorporated in the first place. Sorta makes sense, but hey, sometimes it takes a decade.

There are a lot of people around who think Gemini was named after NASA's project Gemini from the 60's, because when the coaster was built, it was the world's tallest. In reality, project Gemini itself was named after twins because they used two man space capsules. So, Gemini is a very appropriate name for the coaster who's meaning is lost to so many.

And to think, Cedar Point could have become the world's first astrologically-themed park.

I guess they don't study Greek mythology now in school? But even I going into 4th grade when it opened knew what it meant just because I knew the sun signs. I remember not liking the name at the time because I thought it was too fancy and didn't sound scary.
