Future expansions

How much room does CP really have for future growth? I continue to be amazed by where they squeeze in rides but are they running out of room? I think a likely possibility is the main parking lot. They could move the main entrance out towards the causeway and put in a parking ramp or two. Interested in what you guys might think.

well i think they have plenty of room?..... it would be a good idea to go out in the parking lot. i was thinking the same thing.

Maverick. one amazing ride! first person from the SC gates to ride on its opening day! besides red cross
Maverick rides = 18

Yes, there is plenty of room up front. However, i dont think the main entrance will be going anywhere. I think that part of the magic of CP is that the old carousel is right up front as you enter the park. Also there is some room on the southwest side of th epark. Right now it is occupied by a very old dorm for summer employees called Cedars. It is definitely one of the worst of the employee dorms and i could see a new one being built off point and that land being used for something. Also another thing you can think about is a landfill technique to make more room. In japan they built an entire airport that way so dont think that cedar point couldnt do that as well, Especially where the marina is if you look at this picture here http://www.pointbuzz.com/gallery/1955.jpg The Marina area could be filled in and the marina moved up in that area closer to the causeway. One more possible and even probable place for expansion is the small part of parking lot over by Demon Drop. Does anyone think that that might be a goo dreason why they are selling demon drop. Not just because power tower has taken its place as a drop ride, but if you already plan on it not being there in the upcoming years, i bet you have a plan for that particular site. They wouldnt just leave it empty. They could move some flat rides there like they did to make room for dragster, or use that spot and that small piece of parking lot to build a world class coaster. *** Edited 6/12/2006 10:04:19 PM UTC by Steve4Hockey***

There's tons of land that can be used for expanion. With relocating rides and land clearing, we could see a bunch of new rides come in the next years. I personally think that when the DD plot becomes available (as in it's sold) a topple tower would fit in great....they look fun.

There is a lot of room every where in that Park Behind the Gemni, the Beach back where Magnum is, the Parking lot. There are endless (well maby not endless) possibilitys. I would like to see them develop more where Wicked twister is.

I love Monkeys! I love Monkeys!

They could be like Six Flags and build it in the parking lot with no theming.

It's not one of the worst... it *is* the worst. The only redeeming feature it has is that it's close for the employees that live there. I could go home for a dinner break and make it back to my ride with time to spare.

Cedar Point has said counltess times that they are always planning for future improvements and begining with Millennium Force in 2000, began to improvise methods of removing, relocating, and incorporating rides to help the park to continually be able to expand.

Here we go again with the CP is running out of room scare. Is it really that time of year again allready?

Time to pull out the satalite photos.

Here is one to start with http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=41.482716~-82.683726&style=o&lvl=1&scene=2365171 .

I'm sorry I should have added a ;). If Cedar Point ever resorted to Six Flags methods I would feel betrayed.

Last season I talked to one of the staff in the Customer Service building, can't recall their position, but this person basically said that CP owns a ton of property at the other end of the causeway, including a lot of the low rent housing. When they decide the time is right (apparently a time in the indeterminate future), they'll bulldoze all that land and move the parking lot into Sandusky proper. Trams will then be employed to move customers back and forth from the parking to the peninsula, and the old lot can be developed as they see fit.

I'm not sure how much I buy into this, but it is an interesting prospect. Has anybody else heard this one?

As far as building out onto the water, any time you mess with the Great Lakes you need EPA studies, Army Corp of Engineers studies, and the approval of seven states and two provinces to do it. I'm sure they've considered it.

I agree that there is plenty of potential room....I'm just thinking that there are parts of the park that get horrible to navigate when the park is busy. If they keep moving rides around to "squeeze" in flat rides and roller coasters it will become less enjoyable to be in the park. No one likes to feel cramped and crowed. I really like the idea of them using the parking lot section next to DD (if it sells). I would also like to see them put a bridge going out to Millie Island and putting some flat rides out there. Maybe even a draw bridge so they wouldn't have to get rid of the Ferry Excursions.

Sorry didn't realize this was a recurring thread.

Not to mention this would cost a fortune....I think that it is far more likely for them to figure out some sort of transit system to get people to the park.

If they built lower down by those houses they would have to find an efficient high speed way to transport people from one side of the park across the parking lot to the other side. A bullet train at an amusement park sounds pretty cool but I think a standard monorail would work. It would give you a nice view of the parking lot or the lake depending on which side you sit on.

I don't think anybody's building monorails anymore. Not even Disney. It just costs too much for something that is basically transportation infrastructure and not an e-ticket attraction. If this bizarre scenario ever took place, it would probably be buses and trams, I'm guessing.

Disney doesn't build monorails anymore? They're updating the one in California and just built one in Hong Kong.

One technicality on the Great Lakes thing might be though... While i am positive that the North side of the park is on Lake Erie, I am not quite sure if the south side is or not. That stretch of water south of the point might be considered part of the bay and not the lake, in which case im not sure if it would need every one of those requirements other than the epa and corps of engineers studies. Also depends if the two areas http://www.pointbuzz.com/gallery/1955.jpg within the walls are considered privately owned areas since they are within breakwalls and not really part of the bay. Although the idea with relocating the parking lot off-point and using mass transportation of some type sounds like an interesting and possibly cost effective idea. Although the road would probably have to be kept for people who live on the Chaussee.

Didn't Cedar Point use to have like moveable trams that employees use to drive you, to you section where your car is. I thought they did a very long time ago, or that might be Disney World or Universal I'm thinking of. I do think Cedar Point has a lot of room still, but I do not get if they still have a lot of room, why did they take out White Water Landing for the new coaster?

They didn't take out White Water Landing to make room for the new coaster. They're rebuilding White Water Landing either next year or '08 AROUND the new coaster.;) That is why they started construction so early for '07s coaster, because some of those footers are for the new WWL. And then they're going to tear down all the LightHouse Point cabins and cottages to make more room for '09 and 2010 expansion;)
