Mid-year report card

Rapids 77-78's avatar

It is now August (already?) and our favorite park is about mid-way thru its regular season. Unfortunately, I can't make it to Ohio this year to visit her, so I have been living vicariously thru PB posters. So tell me how you think CP is doing this year. Categories are: rides, accomodations, entertainment, and food. Grades are the traditional A,B,C,D,F. Add a comment or two if you feel the need to justify a particular grade. Hopefully she will get a passing grade from you all and graduate this fall.

I really like this topic Rapids. Thanks for posting...

Rides: A

Accomodations: D+ These hotels ("resorts") have so much potential, yet it is never realized. Take some hints from Disney and make room cards accepted as payment throughout the park, have in park purchases delivered to your room, offer more of a resort experience.

Entertainment: B- I think this years offerring has been much better than years past but can still use some improvement.

Food: D Food this year has taken a few good steps forward, but the continued lack of speed, and quality still make the catagory a D. I waited 15 minutes for a cheeseburger, and it came out with no cheese. I told the employee and she took it back and all she did was slap a peice of cheese straight out the fridge onto it. Not melted or anything.

First Top Thrill Dragster train of 2011!
Rollbacks: 1st Triple Rollback of 2009!

Rides: A
Accommodations: B. This year was the first year I stayed in the resorts in years and was quite pleased. The prices were a little ridiculous but our suite in Hotel Breakers was clean and spacious.
Food: C. Prices are still ridiculous but I still have yet to find a bad meal at the Point this year. Service in some spots could still see some help.

This year is definitely a good year for the park attendance wise. It is for sure higher than last year at this point. Let's hope it continues.

Rides: A (seems to be much downtime on Maverick this year)

Shows: B (Not Busch Gardens but better than Six Flags. They all are really energized and peppy)

Food: B- (More options and pizza is pretty good. Outrageous beverage pricing)

Cleanliness: A (compared to 2 years ago it has improved much)

Employee Attitude: C (seems they are rude and lazy but many are nice)

Resort: B- (Old rooms but are pretty clean)

With a 3.2 average they did score honor roll in my book. :)

EDIT: 4:43

Since I have only stayed at lighthouse point and more recently Breakers Express, I can only speak on those.

I give Lighthouse Point Cabins and cottages, since I have stayed in both, an A-

Wifi and the whole cardkey access/ticket/room charge would be a plus. I think this is best value out there. Just Priced out too high...Hey cedar point check out lake rudolph campground rates, yes you have the lake view, but you essential have the same cabins.

I give Breakers Express and solid D.

Wall paper is pealing, cabinets are broken, tube tvs, beds are worn out, its an issue to find parking at times, and a quick service resturant or small snack bar would be great. Also the above mentioned tech upgrades that I mentioned about Lighthouse Point.

Rides are would get a solid B.

Employees I would get a Solid B to as well. Some could embrace speaking english a little better but at times so could I. Now don't get me wrong, I do speak some German and some Spanish, I am not fluent by any means and I make sure when speaking I explain that to people first. I give kudos to one cashier the icee mix up station that knew she was hard to understand so carried a pad a paper around to write out what she was saying.

Atleast for that show;)

rides - A+ - unquestionable, but will not wait over 1/2 hour for any ride - with a good plan this can be done.

accomodations - A - for the cottages at Lighthouse Point. Breakers rating depends on how much $$$ you are willing to spend. Sandcastle Suites has recently earned a B. No CP accomodation is cheap from a $$$ perspective, the value lies elsewhere.

entertainment - cannot rate just yet

food - like the accomodations can vary - personally -A - (I'm not fussy)

You guys are a lot more generous with your rides grading than I am.

It seems that BIG! crowds are back at Cedar Point this year, along with one of the hottest summers on record. So how has the park responded?

Two boats on Snake River Falls with a full queue.

Two trains on Mean Streak with the longest lines that ride has had in years, not to mention the worst quality ride it has given in years.

Two trains on Corkscrew, but I can mostly forgive that one because it doesn't get the crowds that require the third train.

Single-operator crews on large flat rides, meaning that maXair can cycle two or three times in the amount of time it takes for Troika to cycle *once*.

And I still think it was a bad move to remove two trains from Gemini, not because there are times when they could benefit from running six trains, but because when they send half the crew home on a busy day, or when one of the lifts breaks down, it would sure be useful if they could still run three. But then, current operations can't seem to run two without stacking trains, so maybe it isn't even a valid point anymore.

The park just isn't as good at handling large crowds as it once was. I have a notion that part of it is that certain rides are gobbling up the maintenance budget, not just the money, but the available working hours. And part of it is cuts to the operations staff, partly in the name of cost reduction, and partly because they simply couldn't attract enough employees to fill all of the slots. But with the large crowds I have seen there this season, I wonder if either of those reasons remains relevant.

/XXXXX\ /XXX\ /XXXX\_ /X\ /XXXXX\ /X\ /XXXXX
_/XXXXXXX\_/XXXXX\_/XXXXXXX\_/XXX\_/XXXXXXX\__/XXX\__/XXXXXX

But Dave, because of the slowed down load/unload times with the newish seat belts, isn't the third train for CS supposedly superfluous anyway?

Edit: and then I read what you wrote about Gemini, too.

^^I think it would be a great idea to run Gemini with 3 trains each side again. The lines for Gemini have been long this year. The crew is doing a great job this year and they can constantly dispatch trains when the other train is making its 2nd turn around after the main drop. Even if they just kept the other 2 trains on the transfer track; just use them when super crowded or when they only can run 1 side. Why did they stop running 6 trains anyways?

Mean Streak is another one, they can run that ride with 3 trains with barley any stacking since they have the retractable seat belts. It seems like Gemini and Magnum XL 200 could really use some of those retractable seat belts. Everyone always sits on the belts or they always are tangled up.

Corkscrew really doesn't need to run with 3 trains so I am glad they did away with 2 this year.
