Storm damage to power lines on the causeway

Just some technical stuff. Prior to the 2002 season Ohio Edison added a 34.5KV feeder for Wicked Twister. Since that time, all major rides were feed off of it. It if the highest set of wires on the west side of the causeway. That is the only 34.5KV feed to the peninsula. Also, it in not common to use steel poles in this area for voltages below 138KV.

Ok, I had them mixed up then. I thought the highest voltage lines were the ones on the East side of the Causeway that are fed from the small station located on 1st St. just to the East of the Causeway.

Did they just tap into the 34KV feed for Maverick? I know the vaults around Perimiter Rd. house the feeds for Maverick but no idea where they are fed from.

Hilarious campfreak...that is classic.

JUnderhill, The feed for Wicked Twister continues under the beach to just past Breakers. It then heads to TTD. The feed under Perimeter Road was put in for Maverick. I would then assume it connects to the original branch somewhere around TTD to form a big loop. I have no inside info, but I've been an electrical engineer for 40 years, and that stuff (along with CP) really interests me.

I assume Top Thrill Dragster was able to run successfully with these high winds, right? (sarcasm).

^^ Thanks for the info, I worked in the construction industry for a while and even though we never dealt with Utility transmission lines we did work with anything from 120v circuits to 4160 motors on the end user side. I was always interested in such things, even as a kid so it is no wonder I ended up working in the field.

I now work in the oil industry and the electrical infrastructure at the facilities is impressive and simply dwarfs the usage of a place such as CP. Regardless of that I can still turn into a technical geek when it comes to such things and like knowing how they are set up.

Anybody at the park right now? How are the rides running after the power outage, especially the Intamins? Anything down? Haven't seen Dragster running so far...

Did we really need data to confirm that there were damaging winds? :)

It's pretty standard for NWS to send a crew out for a damage survey in cases like this.

And are people really talking about steel poles vs wooden poles or burying the lines for what isn't a very common occurrence? I hardly even see metal poles here, although we have seen some. Most are wooden. Concrete poles also seem to be a new cool thing.

Maybe the smiley didn't convey that an explanation from a weather nerd was not necessary.

^^This is what happens when it's during the season and not speculation time :P

Corkscrew, Power Tower, Magnum, & Monster/ Witches Wheel Crew 2011

Sky Ride, Dragster, Wicked Twister, Windseeker, and Magnum were all down at some point.

Windseeker and Skyride were most probably down due to high winds.

On the way out of the park Weds night I counted 35 poles replaced. Don't know how accurate that is but each pole I counted looked new, still had the green hue from preservatives. Each pole looked like it had freshly disturbed dirt around the base also. If that is a true number, kudos to the utility company crew, they did a tremendous job of replacing that many poles in a 48 hour period.

Today will be a great day to go to the Park. How many people will leave early to get home and watch Cleveland vs. Golden State Basketball Game? Even there are many that go to the Park are from other states. I just wonder if it will be crowed later tonight.
