Mean Streak?

That alone is reason for Cedar Point to go with RMC. I don't see the self proclaimed "roller coaster capital of the world" going with an inferior product.

This. Nailed it.

Mean Streak will get the RMC treatment not the GCI conversion. A GCI refurb of a bland Mean Streak doesn't say Cedar Point at all. An RMC twisted track, mammoth Mean Streak says Cedar Point.

I'll agree with the thought process that RMC is the best choice for Mean Streak and a brand new GCI/GG coaster in Frontier Town where StR was would be the best and most ideal future plans. Only time will tell though.

Couldn't agree more. A GCI would be PERFECT in the STR location with an RMC Mean Streak right next door.

Pretty sure that was what I said in the next sentence.

And yet they have gone with "an inferior product" at Knotts, Valley Fair & Worlds of Fun? Apparently, at least in the recent past, they have had no qualms about GCI.

Also, they went with Intamin for STR.

*GCI. CCI doesn't exist anymore.

All of the parks you mention built from-scratch GCI rides. Only one was a renovation - Ghostrider. Ghostrider is a whole different animal than Mean Streak. It was a great ride when it opened, with a lot of airtime. Mean Streak has never had the great reputation that GR did. And doing the GCI renovation, which keeps almost the entire profile of the ride in GR's case, would just make Mean Streak smooth and kinda boring. RMC could produce better results, as GCI wouldn't be nearly as radical as RMC. And MS needs radical reworking.

Also, GCI has been working on Timber Wolf at WoF, and I've heard that the renovation, while making the ride smoother, has reprofiled it in a way that has made it much more tame and lacking in airtime.

^My response to this is pretty in line with what GigaG said above. I'm also going to add, I don't believe we've seen GCI work on anything near the scope of Mean Streak. We're not even 100% sure if that's an option at this point.

GCI is a great company, and I'm excited for the Prowler look alike that KINGS ISLAND IS GETTING NEXT YEAR (allegedly). Prowler is my favorite ride at Worlds of Fun, Renegade is my favorite ride at Valleyfair... Yet, I'd put my house on an RMC Mean Streak being a superior product to a GCI'd Mean Streak in a hypothetical matchup..

Knotts has a pov of the 'new' GhostRider. Watching side by side of the new and old on YouTube, they really took the lumbering slowness out of it, especially after the MCBR. Which does not slow the train down at all, really. The end of the run after MCBR starts fast and keeps it up. Would love to ride it. It seems as though they did a nice job. After seeing that, I wouldn't be so sure it'll be RMC.

The MCBR doesn't slow the train on GhostRider because it no longer exists. I saw a video on YouTube of a tour of the updated GhostRider and he talked about how they removed the MCBR entirely. They only plan to run 2 trains at any given time on the ride, so it really is unnecessary I suppose.

Haven't posted in this forum since before Maverick was built. Had to add my 2 cents here...

Gatekeeper and Valravn are great looking rides. Both have really helped spruce the park up, and are popular with the GP. However, in the years after 2007, I've really missed that risky ingenuity that CP used to have. That's what the park is still about for me. Pushing the envelope. I still remember how "futuristic" Millennium Force seemed when I was 10. That open train, the cable lift, the box track. I'm perfectly fine with the park rounding itself off, building family rides, and improving on-site lodging. I just hope they don't forget who they really are

For years, I've been hearing nothing but great things about RMC. They reminded me of Intamin in a way. Innovative, new, and intense. Basically, I'm astounded CP hasn't installed one already. It makes the park seem behind the times in a way. This isn't a gripe as much as it's a mere grumble. I love the park regardless. At the same time, if these rumors of an RMC Mean Streak turn out to be false, it would be a huge bummer. CP needs a curveball now. They've built 2 very enjoyable "safe" coasters recently. I just hope that isn't the trend from now on.

RMC Mean Streak (or custom layout, I dont care) would bring me to opening day at the park for the first time since 2007. I'd be beyond stoked.

That's different. Ghostrider has a great layout, and Prowler and Renegade are new rides. A GCI refurbishment of Mean Streak wouldn't improve the ride very much because of the boring layout. It would still be an average ride to me.

I have a MS question. It would seem that most of the super structure has a sprinkler system that is used to "water the ride." I don't fully grasp this concept. Is this unique to this coaster? Do other parks use this technique? What's the benefit of wet southern yellow pine?

I've always thought there was a limit to how big you could build a traditional woodie without it becoming a nightmare for maintenance and riders. About 120-130ft tall seems to be a good height IMO, after that rides seem to tear themselves apart and become amazingly rough. I don't think it's a surprise that the first few rides we saw get the RMC conversion where Mean Streak's little brothers down in Texas. When you look at rides like Mean Streak Texas Giant, Rattler, SoB you can easily argue that TRADITIONAL wood has it's limits. People even complain about the Voyage as getting intensely rough the past few seasons. That would be my logic against GCI doing MS. Sure the first season or two would probably smooth out the ride, but I think we would be back to where we are now with a rough ride people avoid.

I think for a ride the size of MS, RMC is the best option to create something new and exciting and world class. Save GCI or GG for a new woodie in the future.

It prolongs the life of the wood. Dry lumber will get beat up alot quicker than wet lumber. Also the water has mixture of pesticides and fire retardant mixed in.

08 -Thunder Canyon, 09 - Maverick, 10 - Mean Streak, 11 & 12 - Mean Streak ATL, 13 - Maverick TL

Thanks CoasterKyle. While I get the fire retardant and the pesticide approach, keeping wood wet goes against everything I was ever taught about home ownership.

I don't understand this. It couldn't be farther from the truth. Voyage is very smooth. I think people just think it's rough because it is such an insanely intense ride. Not to mention it destroys the Beast at night.

^ Yeah I agree. The word I would use is wild and crazy! However, I love The Beast more than Voyage just because I grew up riding it as a kid. I can maybe ride Voyage like 5 straight times and then I need to sit down and take a breather.

Back to everyone else on here, I'm sure maybe a few of you have been on Gold striker in California. How can we sit here and say that GCI re profiling Mean Streak will make it the same boring ride? What if GCI plans to alter the layout somewhat? Maybe it would have more lateral turns and the hills could be bigger. All I'm saying is, whether it's GCI or RMC, we shouldn't judge how it's going to be until the announcement is made.

GCI can alter the layout but it would take a lot more altering that they did for the Legend this year.

Dead on 100%! Well said.

Currently on our 1yr journey to visit every major park in the US and Canada.

Did it ever occur to you Coaster Cam that GCI did exactly what the client wanted?. If CP wants them to alter the layout, they can do it. It's ultimately up to the people paying the bills and how much they want done.

CoasterCam's avatar

I'm fully aware of that. I never said that GCI would create an inferior product to RMC if they changed the layout. I'm not knocking GCI at all. I just meant that there is a lot more length to work with on MS than on the Legend. The Legend had a great layout anyway. They didn't not need to change the layout much.
