Bay Harbor

How does everyone feel about Bay Harbor? Is the food good? It seems to look like the most upscale restaurant you can get on point. Looks to be a bit dated however….

I have never been so my word means nothing…but I always pictured it as being priced higher than it’s worth and a nice place for old people. Like Cabin Club in westlake if anyone is familiar.

Also looking at the google maps photos, unless I am seeing something, is there a pool next to the restaurant? Who would this be utilized by?

It is dated however, great food and having the a view of the boats helps with the outdated décor. The pool is for the marina guests.

I would give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. At most. That half star is for the view. The building and decor are straight out of 1982, and there was nothing special about the seafood (which is why we went). I do recall the service being very good. But it's been awhile (meaning maybe it has improved); we went on an anniversary trip back in 2019, and nothing about it made us want to hurry and go back.

It seems like a place a lot of locals would hit up to pretend they're going to a fancy dinner. And maybe they were back in 1982.

It's insanely mediocre, but probably as good as it gets for Sandusky. I haven't eaten there in probably eight years. They served my kid spoiled milk, who promptly threw it up all over the restaurant.

Sucks.

Off the top of my head, Crabby Joes Dockside (much better food but with a Jimmy Buffet/Outdoor music vibe) and Landmark (downtown...more upscale vibe and much better food) are two Sandusky joints that make Bay Harbor taste like a school cafeteria.

It's a shame, really, because it is "sold" as if it is some kind of upscale place. Not to mention it sits on some absolutely prime real estate not only for the park but also the harbor.

Maybe the park has something up it's sleeves with it and the nearby former Cedars site.

Head across the bay in Sandusky to Saucy Brew Works. It was surprisingly more upscale menu than the one in Cleveland, which is more laid back.

The Bay Harbor was originally the Cedar Point Yacht Club. Pretty sure there was originally a pool there. As I recall it went away & now is back.

I don't know if it still is but there was a time Bay Harbor was open in the winter. From what I understand, it was a favorite of Kinzel and his friends, along with the marina where they all had boats. So I imagine that is why it has stayed around so long. It wasn't uncommon to see Kinzel's car over there in the evening for dinner most days of the week.

Bay Harbor is about as fancy as I get without feeling uncomfortable.
Angry Bull is a local fav too. Good food, outdate decor. Love it.

If you have time, or you are heading west after a visit to CP, stop at Mon Ami winery in Port Clinton. Good food, nice atmosphere. Good date night location superior to Bay Harbor. Also recommended: Twin Oast on Catawba.

Is it Gideon Wine Company now? Anyway, whatever it is called now we had a very nice evening there and an exceptional meal in the "chalet".

I agree with those who aren’t too impressed with Bay Harbor. I had wanted to eat there for years, and my family finally ordered some takeout to enjoy in the Breakers a couple years ago. Mind you, I expected the quality to be slightly less because that’s not uncommon with takeout, but we didn’t enjoy the meal. My fish was supposed to be lightly breaded, but it was coated in a hard breading. And one of the fish orders smelled so fishy that we were afraid to eat it. The fish was also over cooked. As I recall, the sides were nothing special and the mashed potatoes were very dry. It was a disappointment and definitely not worth the price.

Sounds like Bay Harbor needs an upgrade. I think if they added the world famous CP hand breaded chicken tenders they would see an immediate increase in positive reviews.

For anyone looking for the real name of the winery in Port Clinton - it's Gideon Owen Wine Company.

I imagine that since Bay Harbor is still open, as outdate as it is, it's because it is still making money. Likely from marina guests and the older crowd who hang with Kinzel so until that crowd stops going, there might not be a need to change anything about the place.

I mean, the fire pit outside is nice if you grab a whiskey from the bar and have a seat on a cool night, but I can do that at Breakers now, too.
