Chaos Came Close Today

If the piece fell by the lift piston, as reported, how can people standing in line be hurt by it? Sounds like the drive fell straight down. No, parts falling of are not necessarily a big deal. If a structural piece falls off, yes that is a big deal. If a piece of the drive system falls off, I don’t think it’s a big deal. They are just machines, things break every now and then. And no, it wouldn’t have caused me much concern if I were on the ride when it happened.

A number of years ago a ride at PKI, similar to the Witches Wheel, had the drive mechanism seize up while in motion. The wheel stopped with a big jolt, throwing riders around the cabin. A few injuries resulted. The PKI incident is why the height requirement on Witches Wheel was changed, taller people won’t get thrown around as much during a sudden stop. This is pure speculation, but could it be that Chaos has a safer drive that breaks away if it seizes, so the riders don’t come to a jolting stop? Similar to shear pins on a jet engine, where the engine is designed to fall off the wing if it vibrates too much?

Better safe than sorry, no more Chaos for me.

Poor CP is sure having their share of problems so far this year. As my mom said, they better get their act together or they'll end up with the same kind of reputation as Six Flags.

Your Mom obviously doesn't understand the difference between customer service and mechanical downtime.

Rider: You should always try things at least three times. Sometimes I feel sick on coasters which is unusual...but it's all in how you are feeling that day! How you wake up in the morning I guess!!! Give EVERYTHING three tries...and if you STILL don't like it...well then, I guess you just don't like it!!!! That is...IF we get to ride chaos again....::sad::

Ehhh.... still no thanks. I just dont like flat rides (except Scrambler) as much as the coasters.

RIDE IT OUT!

Update from the park... the Chaos breakdown was a non-event. Something seized up, and they had to manually lower the ride to let people off. Not a single person was transported in the body buggy.

Sorry to disappoint you all.

Jeff, there are times when I think that you've had a bad day and decide to let it show here...I really do, instead of saying oh its OBVIOUS that your mom blah blah blah, try explaining nicely to people around here, we all have opinions, and we all don't have Mr. Kinzels phone number....

I don't think Jeff was being nasty or obnoxious. He was stating a fact. There is a big difference between ride maintenance problems and customer service. To compare CP's maintenance problems with SF's customer service problems (inefficient operation of rides) is not a fair comparison.

Ouch!!!...i must have went on that ride a million times...I hope they fix and not just get rid of it.

Welcome to New York City

So did a piece breaking off or not? If something came off it - I'm through with Chaos...still.

As my mom said, they better get their act together or they'll end up with the same kind of reputation as Six Flags.

Is this from her own perspective or what the media has fed her?

In regards to people running depsite a part falling out nowhere near them (if that is the case) the answer is simple: panic.

OK, let's talk about Chance rides for a minute. Look at the website and tell us how many of those rides you ride on a regular basis. Interesting to see how many rides they actually manufacture. http://www.rides.com

Non-event is fine with me except the "not a single person transported in the body buggy" is simply not true. A young black guy in (probably) his mid to late teens was in the buggy with his forearm wrapped when it went beeping through the chain link fence into the Breakers parking lot. More likely no one was transported to the hospital.

The ride is currently in the "parked" position. There is a little scattered debris around it. The biggest difference is the ride vehicles are parked facing near up and in a few different positions.

Wow... why is there so much tension in these forums?

Ralph: The SF comment was uncalled for. There are many SF around the country...that is why they have a higher incident rate than CP.

Pete: The darn thing broke apart mid-ride... Yes ...there IS cause for concern there. By the way... went to CP today and it's still down.

Jeff: You are the moderator here... let's see some professionalism.

Anyone else??? Sorry...but I had to run off with the mouth, I am tired and grouchy...sorry I ran into THIS forum tonight!!! Can we close it? ::laugh:: Seriously folks... let's try to get along ok. Once upon a time I really liked coming to GTTP... I'd rather not have to start searching for "nicer" boards to talk on!!!

::kisses!!!:: luv yas................

::sigh::

Professionalism? You're new here, aren't you? I pay the bills, I act as I see fit. That's the way it is. If you don't like it, you're welcome not to visit.

Have a nice professional day, and I'd advise against going to any forum and telling the established regulars what and how to post.

Laura: over the years, in different vehicles I've owned, I've had CV joints blow apart, hydraulic brake lines burst, drive shafts drop after a U-joint failure, timing chains break, exhaust system hangers fail, springs break, etc. These all happened on well maintained vehicles. None of these failures made me feel my vehicle is unsafe. And these are just land vehicles, I won’t even start about water craft.

Chaos did not break apart, the drive system did. BIG difference. Riders are in no danger if parts of the drive system are not on the ride. You cannot associate that type of mechanical failure with a structural failure. It just makes no sense. If the transmission of your car suffers bearing failure and seizes, what happens? You get out and walk. Your car did not break in half and slide down the road with sparks flying.

Everyone should get over this paranoia. No one was in danger. This was a non-event. As for the guy in the body buggy, his injury could be totally unrelated. He could have come from anywhere in the park, or slipped and fell getting out of his car, if he was on Chaos.

I noticed that on this website, they're selling a Chaos in their "used rides" section. You don't think it could be... Nah.

I have an underwater camera just in case I crash my car into a river, and at the last minute I see a photo opportunity of a fish that I have never seen.

perhaps Jeff, acting like a two-year old is professionalism, and Laura, I would advise moving to a different forum, like TPOL, or the new ones that coming to Experience the Point, at least people who aren't CEOs of all of the ride companies allow opinions there, I'm sorry Jeff, but maybe you do pay the bills and all, but lately you haven't acted the part, try it sometime, people might not think of you as an asshole sometimes

From what I've heard, Laura is too old for the forums at TPOL. In reference to Experience the Point, the site has already stolen the Pop Forums software once, not to mention ripping content off of other sites (including mine). I don't remember hearing those sites mentioned during the CoasterMania Q&A as GTTP was.

For as much as Jeff's personality comes through at times, I just don't see it in this thread. I've been discussing Cedar Point on the Internet since 1992 ... and I'm sure some of the Internet old-timers who I've known since then will back me on this. I've seen it all ... flame wars, trolls, and on and on. Only here at GTTP is there a combination of crowd control and great discussion. I, for one, appreciate it.
