Magnum Memories

. That first lift hill is pretty high and make me very nervous. But, I'm not going to get over my fear of heights with 2 feet planted on the ground.

That is exactly the way that I used to be! But all you have to realize is that it's just that first hill that is intimidating. Once you get past that, the entire ride is just amazing. I am still deathly afraid of heights. The worst part about coasters for me is the walk up the stairs in the lines. lol. But as I have always said, I feel safer on a coaster than in a car.

And I realized that Magnums first hill is actually only a tiny bit taller than MF's 3rd hill. But for some reason that first hill on Magnum still feels like its 1000 feet tall, and the third hill on MF is no big deal. lol. I guess Josh M is right. It's just that first hill that is so darn intimidating.

All my rides on Magnum are my favorites. But two of them stand out the best. The first one is from my first trip to CP when I conquered my fear of heights and got on Magnum. For the next 3 months all anyone who knew me heard was "I still cannot believe I rode that." I would show them the post card and say "See, I rode that!!".

My second favorite memory is from my second ride on Magnum (2nd trip to CP). See, even though I conqured Magnum, I did it with my eyes closed because I was too chicken. lol. So the second time I rode it, I did it with my eyes open. And it was AMAZING!! I truly fell in love that day.

"You wanna, you gotta, you hafta hold on, Cedar Point...HOLD ON!"

Actually, Magnums second hill his taller then MF's third hill. At the time MF was built Magnum still held the record for tallest non lift hill. Not sure if thats still true now.

Note: Steel Phantom/Phantom's Revenge doesn't count, due to the change in elevation, we are talking strictly on the height of the crest of the hill above the ground.

How about the year the lift motor went out couple days before Coastermania? Friday came and no motor. So what do they do? Borrow motor from DT. I was on the first train out that afternoon when it opened. They did not have the lift speed correct. They just wanted to get it running. It was at top of lift in under 25 seconds! Then the trims were open! The whole ride was clocked at about 2:10-2:15. Those were the most insane rides I can remember!

Could be that I was afraid of being on that first hill then.. lol

I'll never forget when Magnum first opened, it dominated the park skyline!

Actually, I'm pretty sure that's incorrect. MF's third hill is 182 feet, and I believe that Magnum's 2nd hill is 156 feet. Maybe some of the really hardcore coaster enthusiasts (I try to be a "casual enthusiast") can confirm.

^Checking the Cedar Point website, your correct. MF broke "Magnum's Record" when it opened (SD2000 opened after MF.)

MAgnums hill seems so much higher because it takes a long time for it to get to the top.

Working opening day 2 years ago, having to run up the lift 4 times in an hour because of the trains being stuck and standing up there having to tell jokes to calm everyone down. And besides, the view is amazing, tallest ride in the park you can climb. And being able to ride it numerous times that week before any of you is always good, haha.

You worked opening day 2 years ago? Who are you?

A magnum memories I had include getting stuck on the hill and joking around with everyone in the train thinking it was mechanical, but sat there only to find out it was some dude with a camera taking pics of the lake, and also riding it with my sister a while back with her water bottle. It flew up into the air and bounced over above the train and someone in the back actually caught it!! Ahhh, good times!

My most noteworthy magnum memory was of July 4th, 2004. It was my first season working at Cedar Point and I had not yet ridden many of the rides. I was a novice to the world of coasters and I found the larger ones like Millenium and Magnum a bit intimidating at the time. Sometimes I would quiver when I looked up from my position lifeguarding along Mainstream and saw the trains rolling back on Dragster. Needless to say it took a bit of prompting by some of my friends to get me to ride Magnum.

That July 4th, I went with one of my roommates from Commons and two girls he knew that worked in the park. We had been drinking before entering the park and needless to say I was trying too hard to impress one of the girls. We stopped in the Red Garter Saloon along the way (we didn't order anything) and I exclaimed "this [the saloon] is the best ride in the park!"

A little awhile later, we all decided to ride the Magnum. I was scared, and I trembled as the train slowly climbed the first lift hill. We got to the top and suddenly we plunged down the first hill. At that point, I got the impulse to yell the name of the girl I was trying to impress and scream "will you marry me?" I yelled a few other things too, especially during the part where the ride goes through the tunnels and is closer to the ground to Soak City.

The memory of that ride has lasted these past four years. The marrying thing was a joke and we had a good laugh about it all summer. A few times, she asked me when I was getting her the ring.

I know my friend and I were the first 2 people waited in the line, and got on the Magnum 1st when it opened in 1989. We were on the front seat. Right when it came out of the station it got stuck, when we started up on the hill we were stuck, and right out of the 3rd Tunnel went were stuck too. With all the times we were stuck it was for a few minutes and not long.

I remember, when I was about 10, I went on Magnum with my mom. Now at that time my mom HATED roller coasters, so this was like phenomena to me, and so we were on the first hill, and she says "Dylan if I fall out will you save me?" And just then we went over the hill, and shes screaming up a storm, in which made me laugh really hard, and when we got off, we went to buy pictures, and her face was priceless. You could not have payed me to laugh that hard in one day.

Cedar Point is undoubtedly amazing.

My most memorable ride on Magnum was in the front car when my wife (then fiancee) put the car keys in the top pocket of her bib overalls and I seen them float out of her pocket on the second hill and fly through the air. I spent the rest of the ride wondering how we were going to get home until we got back to the station and heard a teenager yell "I caught the keys" . To say the least we were very happy that this story had a happy ending.

Freezing during Halloweekends, and having the loudest lift hill in the park.
